Background

Christopher Lord DeLong is a veteran institutional investor best known for his 25-year run at Taconic Capital Advisors L.P., the event-driven, multi-strategy hedge fund founded in 1999 by former Goldman Sachs partners Frank Brosens and Ken Brody. DeLong was a founding member of the Taconic team in 1999, served as a Portfolio Manager from 2008 to 2012, and became the firm's Chief Investment Officer in 2013, a role he held until his retirement at the end of 2023. During his tenure Taconic pursued an event-driven, multi-strategy approach aimed at generating strong risk-adjusted returns across market cycles.

DeLong's path to investing ran through law and derivatives. He earned an A.B. in European History from Harvard College in 1989 and a J.D. from Yale Law School in 1993. He began his career as a judicial clerk on the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals, then practiced as an associate at the law firms Cravath, Swaine & Moore and Howard, Darby & Levin. He moved into finance as a Vice President in the Equity Derivatives Group at J.P. Morgan Securities from roughly 1996 to 1999 before helping launch Taconic.

In January 2024, following his departure from Taconic, DeLong founded and became CEO/CIO of Birnam Oak Advisors, LP, an institutional investment advisory firm. Birnam Oak's stated approach is to generate superior risk-adjusted returns by exploiting inefficiencies created by large pools of passive capital, the mechanistic use of "factors," and other capital flows insensitive to price discovery across global asset markets.

Note: DeLong appears in the World Economic Forum's community of experts, reflecting his standing as a senior institutional investor.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Core professional discipline is event-driven, multi-strategy public-market investing — the model he ran as CIO of Taconic Capital and now pursues at Birnam Oak Advisors.
  • At Birnam Oak, the stated thesis is to exploit market inefficiencies created by passive capital, mechanistic factor investing, and price-insensitive capital flows across global asset markets.
  • The "Angel Investor / Seed Round" framing originates from third-party fundraising databases (e.g., Foundersuite), not from a publicly stated venture thesis; no verified check size, target-company profile, or startup sector focus could be confirmed from primary sources.

Notable Investments

  • No verified individual angel or seed-stage startup investments were found in public sources.
  • Professionally, his most notable "investments" were the institutional, event-driven strategies he oversaw as CIO of Taconic Capital Advisors (public equities, credit, and event-driven positions disclosed via the firm's 13F filings).
