Background

Chris Kalnin is the founder and CEO of BKV Corporation, a U.S. natural-gas producer and carbon-capture innovator that listed on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2024 under the ticker "BKV." He started the company in June 2015 — originally as Kalnin Ventures LLC / Banpu Kalnin Ventures — with backing from Thailand's Banpu Public Company Ltd., and grew it from a startup into one of the top natural-gas producers in the country, with more than 350 employees and assets across Pennsylvania and Texas.

Before founding the business, Kalnin was Vice President of Strategic Business Operations and Planning at Level 3 Communications (now Lumen). Earlier, he served as a strategic advisor to the CEO of PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP), Thailand's national oil and gas company; worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company; and began his career as a financial analyst at Credit Suisse First Boston.

He earned an HBA with distinction from the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario and an MBA, summa cum laude, from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. He was recognized in Hart Energy's "Forty Under 40" in 2017 as Managing Director and Founder of Kalnin Ventures.

Under Kalnin, the company pursued a disciplined roll-up of natural-gas assets: it assembled a Marcellus position through multiple deals before making its largest move — the 2020 acquisition of Devon Energy's Barnett Shale assets — and then pivoted toward becoming a vertically integrated "natural gas + carbon capture + power" business aimed at delivering low-carbon molecules and electrons to industrial and data-center customers.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests via control acquisitions of producing natural-gas assets, not venture financing — building scale through a buy-and-optimize strategy in core U.S. basins (Marcellus, then Barnett).
  • Targets high-quality, cash-flowing upstream assets at attractive entry prices, often in "forgotten" or out-of-favor basins (he has publicly argued the Barnett is "ripe" for revival).
  • Increasingly focused on carbon capture, utilization and sequestration (CCUS) as a differentiator — positioning BKV to sell "carbon-neutral" or low-carbon natural gas.
  • Pursuing a vertically integrated power thesis: owning gas production, sequestration, and gas-fired power generation to serve surging electricity demand from AI hyperscalers and data centers (he calls this a "megatrend").
  • Prefers large, strategic transactions and joint ventures (e.g., partnering with major infrastructure and midstream players) over small minority stakes.

Notable Investments

  • BKV Corporation — Founded 2015; the parent natural-gas E&P and carbon-capture company he built from scratch and took public on the NYSE in 2024 (IPO raised ~$270M at $18.00/share).
  • Barnett Shale acquisition (Devon Energy assets), 2020 — Banpu Kalnin Ventures closed the ~$570M cash purchase (plus up to $260M in contingent payments), its largest deal; brought the combined portfolio above 345,000 net acres and 3.7 Tcfe of proved reserves.
  • Marcellus roll-up, 2017–2019 — A series of deals in the northeast Marcellus, including a ~$210M acquisition and a ~$105M sixth Marcellus position; roughly $417M across five Marcellus deals over two years.
  • Temple, Texas power plants — Acquired two gas-fired plants (~1.5 GW total capacity) to supply power, positioned for long-term data-center power purchase agreements.
  • Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners CCUS JV (2025) — $500M commitment from CIP for up to a 49% interest in a U.S. carbon-capture joint venture.
  • Comstock Resources collaboration (2025) — Agreement to accelerate deployment of carbon-capture projects.
