Background

Chuang "Vincent" Tao is an internationally recognized geospatial technologist turned serial entrepreneur and investor. He earned a BSc in geospatial engineering/remote sensing and an MSc in computer vision and remote sensing from Wuhan University, then a PhD in Geospatial (Geomatics) Information Engineering from the University of Calgary in Canada. Around 2000, at roughly age 32, he became a tenured professor and Canada Research Chair at York University in Toronto, where he directed the Geospatial Information and Communication Technology (GeoICT) Lab, helped build the university's geomatics program, and authored well over 200 technical papers and multiple patents. In 2017 he received an honorary doctorate from York's Lassonde School of Engineering.

In 2001–2002 Tao founded GeoTango in Toronto, an early pioneer of web-based 3D Earth mapping (its "GlobeView" system predated Google Earth). Microsoft acquired GeoTango in 2005 — frequently cited as the first Chinese-founder company acquired by Microsoft — and Tao became a founding member and director of Microsoft's Virtual Earth (later Bing Maps 3D) division, earning the nickname "father of Microsoft Maps" as the platform scaled across 120+ countries.

Returning to China, Tao co-founded and led online-video platform PPTV (PPLive) as CEO, growing it into one of China's largest internet-TV services (hundreds of millions of monthly users) and famously securing a large investment from SoftBank's Masayoshi Son. After PPTV, he moved into full-time investing and founded Z Ventures (知卓资本), and in 2018 launched Wayz.ai (维智科技), a spatiotemporal-AI ("ST-AI") company building digital-twin/"phygital" world models for retail site selection, market intelligence, urban planning and city management (recent products include "DeepLocal").

Tao's angel/advisory work — including his role as Investor & Advisor to blockchain mapping project GoWithMi — sits at the intersection of his lifelong specialty (maps and location) and his investment thesis around spatial data and decentralized/intelligent infrastructure.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests primarily at the angel and early stage through Z Ventures, which describes a "one body, two wings" (一体两翼) strategy: an angel/VC core plus two industry engines — intelligent IoT and spatial/location-based services (LBS).
  • Priority sector #1: the spatial-information industry — digital maps, BeiDou/GPS positioning, navigation, drones and satellites — reflecting his geomatics career; #2: advanced/intelligent industry and IoT; #3: big health; plus consumer/e-commerce ("Life") and fintech.
  • Positions himself as a hands-on "capital partner" to founders, pairing capital with media, traffic and big-data/infrastructure resources rather than passive checks.
  • Scale (per Z Ventures materials): has invested in / incubated close to 100 companies and manages multiple funds — angel/early-stage pools on the order of ~1 billion RMB and later-stage pools on the order of ~4 billion RMB.
  • Openly cites Masayoshi Son / SoftBank as a major influence on his big-bet, technology-wave investing style.

Notable Investments

  • GoWithMi — decentralized/blockchain location-based-services and "consensus map" project; Tao is listed as an Investor & Advisor (a natural fit given his mapping background). Associated with GoWithMi's 2018-era token/ICO fundraising.
  • Z Ventures (知卓资本) portfolio — nearly 100 startups incubated/backed, concentrated in spatial information, positioning/navigation, IoT and health; Z Ventures is his primary angel/VC vehicle.
  • *(Companies he founded/operated rather than passively backed, for context on his track record:)* GeoTango (3D web mapping; acquired by Microsoft, 2005), PPTV / PPLive (online TV; co-founder & CEO), and Wayz.ai / 维智科技 (spatiotemporal AI, founded 2018; his current operating company).
