Background
Chuck Gordon was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and studied at UCLA (where, notably, he studied ceramics). During his junior year he spent a semester abroad studying entrepreneurship at the National University of Singapore. Needing somewhere to stash his belongings for the trip — and unwilling to pay roughly $1,000 for a storage unit — he split his stuff between his college suitemate Mario Feghali's family attic and his girlfriend's place. That personal pain point became the seed of SpareFoot.
Gordon and Feghali launched SpareFoot in the summer of 2008 and relocated the company to Austin, Texas. Gordon described it early on as "Hotels.com for storage" (and, in another framing, an Airbnb-style peer-to-peer model), before the company matured into an online marketplace connecting consumers with professional self-storage operators. Under Gordon as CEO, SpareFoot became one of Austin's best-known startups, raising venture funding from investors including Capital Factory, FLOODGATE, Silverton Partners, Insight Partners, Monkfish Equity, and a $33M growth round led by Revolution Growth.
In 2018, SpareFoot combined with SiteLink and storEDGE — backed by private equity firm Cove Hill Partners — to form Storable, a broader technology platform for the self-storage and specialty real estate industry. Gordon has served as CEO of the combined company since, leading it for more than 16 years across the SpareFoot and Storable eras. His co-founder Mario Feghali serves as Storable's CIO.
Alongside his operating career, Gordon invests personally as an angel, backing early-stage founders — often in enterprise software and healthcare technology. He has said he values "hard work, but not at the expense of anyone's happiness," and outside of work is an avid cook, gardener, and traveler who has visited 56 countries.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as an individual angel, typically at the pre-seed/seed stage, rather than through a formal fund.
- Gravitates toward enterprise/vertical SaaS and marketplace businesses — the model he built and scaled himself with SpareFoot/Storable.
- Has backed HealthTech / healthcare-enterprise software (e.g., MedScout), signaling openness beyond his core storage/marketplace domain.
- Frequently co-invests with his Storable co-founder Mario Feghali, suggesting founder-operator conviction and a partner-style approach to angel deals.
- As a two-time founder-CEO who bootstrapped a real-world pain point into a category-defining company, he is well positioned to say yes to operator-founders solving concrete, unglamorous B2B problems.
Notable Investments
- MedScout — Healthcare sales-intelligence software empowering teams that sell into physician offices and medical centers; Gordon (with Mario Feghali) participated in its $800K pre-seed round (June 2021), led by LiveOak Venture Partners. Co-founded by Skylar Talley and Casey Shattuck.
- Press (Services) — listed among his angel investments in aggregator profiles (details limited).
- *(Note: Gordon's publicly documented angel portfolio is small; MedScout is his most clearly sourced and recent deal. His largest "investments of time" remain his own companies, SpareFoot and Storable.)*
