Background
Cindy Jin is a Partner (and, per SBVA's own team listing, a Managing Director for Korea) at SBVA, the venture firm formerly known as SoftBank Ventures Asia and, before that, SoftBank Ventures Korea. She joined the firm in March 2014, becoming its first female investment manager, and has since risen through the ranks — Bloomberg and other databases have listed her as a Principal, and by 2021 she was designated a Partner covering Korea and Southeast Asia. SBVA spun out of the SoftBank Group in 2022 and rebranded, but continues as one of Asia's most established early-stage investors, having backed roughly 200+ startups since 2000, including Nexon, SundayToz (Anipang), Devsisters, KeyEast, and later Southeast Asian names such as Tokopedia, RedMart, and ShopBack.
Before venture capital, Jin spent roughly four years in investment banking, working at Credit Suisse in New York and Hong Kong (TMT / technology-media-telecom group) and at BofA Merrill Lynch in equity capital markets (pre-IPO and secondary offerings), where she was an associate around 2011–2012. She then moved into impact and early-stage investing as a director at D3Jubilee (2013–2014), a Korean impact-investment firm, providing management consulting and financial advisory to social enterprises and co-investing in early-stage companies. Her earlier experience also includes consulting at Bain & Company and a legal internship at Kim & Chang.
Jin holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, which she pursued after the 2008 financial crisis. She is a visible advocate for founders and for women in venture, having appeared in community sessions such as HerVest to discuss her investment philosophy and career path.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests primarily at seed and early stage (seed / Series A) with capacity to follow on into growth rounds, operating out of SBVA's Korea practice.
- Evaluates opportunities across five core pillars: team quality, market size and growth, business model, technology/competitive advantage, and valuation/financials.
- Believes strongly in founders: *"A company reflects the personality and values of its founder and C-suite."* She looks for leadership capable of attracting talent and investor confidence.
- Her four stated criteria in an earlier interview: a large, high-growth market; a meaningful service that drives market innovation; a clear exit path (M&A or IPO); and a strong team.
- Pursues a distinctive cross-border "invest → trend-transfer → localization → cross-ownership" playbook across China, Korea, and Japan, using SBVA's network to consolidate sectors and engineer exits.
- Increasingly thematic: associated with SBVA's Alpha Intelligence Fund targeting US AI startups (positioning Korean LPs as Asia market-entry partners), and interest in Japan's post-2022 emerging ecosystem. SBVA's recent allocation skews heavily to AI (~44%) and robotics (~27%).
- On Korean founders, her recurring message: *"Korean CEOs tend to be humble… but it is also important to boast what you've got. If you want to expand further, stay confident."*
Notable Investments
- KREAM — Korea's leading sneaker/resale marketplace (Naver-affiliated); Jin led seed/Series A investment.
- SODA / SNKRDUNK — Japanese sneaker resale platform; SBVA led its Series C (~US$56.4M, total funding ~US$81.4M), with KREAM also participating. Jin helped facilitate the acquisition of #2 player Monokabu to consolidate the market toward a joint IPO structure.
- GoTo (Tokopedia / Gojek) — coordinated exit activity alongside Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and UBS.
- Firm-level historic portfolio she is associated with at SoftBank Ventures Korea/Asia: Nexon, SundayToz (Anipang), Devsisters, KeyEast, Tokopedia, RedMart, ShopBack, Wizwid.
