Background
Claudia D'Augusta is a corporate-finance and life-sciences executive with more than 25 years of experience in finance, capital markets, and M&A, roughly two decades of it in biotech. She holds a bachelor's degree in Economics and a Ph.D. in Business Administration and Finance from Bocconi University in Milan (studies circa 1994–1998). Her early career included roles at Deloitte & Touche in Milan, private-equity firm Apax Partners in Madrid, and Finance Director of Aquanima (Santander Group).
She moved into biotech at Cellerix in 2004, becoming CFO and leading its 2011 reverse merger with Euronext-listed TiGenix. As CFO of TiGenix, she was a member of the Executive Committee responsible for Finance, Legal, and Investor Relations, and steered the company through the EU approval of its allogeneic stem-cell therapy Alofisel, a 2016 NASDAQ IPO, and its ~€520M acquisition by Takeda in 2018 (after which she served as General Manager of TiGenix). She subsequently became CFO of Swiss rare-disease biotech Therachon (acquired by Pfizer in mid-2019), then CFO of VectivBio, which she took public on Nasdaq (2021) and which was acquired by Ironwood Pharmaceuticals for ~$1B in 2023. As of 2025 she is Group CFO of Windward Bio, a respiratory-immunology company that launched with a $200M Series A.
In September 2018, Ysios Capital appointed D'Augusta as a Venture Partner (announced alongside Lance Berman) to strengthen its strategic, analytical, and international capabilities. Ysios itself is one of Spain's leading life-sciences VC firms, founded in 2008 by Cristina Garmendia, Josep Sanfeliu, Julia Salaverría, Joël Jean-Mairet, and others, managing several funds investing across European and US biotech and medtech.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in life sciences — biotech/biopharma therapeutics and medical technology — aligned with Ysios Capital's mandate of "backing the breakthroughs of tomorrow."
- As a Venture Partner, her value-add is financial architecture and strategic guidance: structuring rounds, IPOs, and M&A; investor relations; and international (US/EU) positioning — precisely the skills she deployed at TiGenix, Therachon, VectivBio, and Windward Bio.
- Gravitates toward companies with credible clinical/regulatory milestones and a clear value-inflection or exit path (NASDAQ IPO or strategic acquisition), reflecting a track record of taking assets from private financing to public markets and large pharma exits.
- Ysios generally leads or co-leads rounds in innovative human-health companies and stays involved through board seats and follow-on financing.
Notable Investments
- VectivBio — Swiss rare-GI-disease biotech (lead asset apraglutide, a GLP-2 analog); Nasdaq IPO 2021; acquired by Ironwood Pharmaceuticals for ~$1B (2023).
- Windward Bio — respiratory/immunology biotech developing WIN378, a long-acting anti-TSLP antibody for asthma and COPD; launched Jan 2025 with a $200M Series A (OrbiMed, Novo Holdings, Blue Owl, and others).
- Therachon — clinical-stage rare-disease biotech; acquired by Pfizer (2019).
- TiGenix / Cellerix — stem-cell therapy company behind Alofisel; NASDAQ IPO 2016; acquired by Takeda for ~€520M (2018).
- Ysios Capital portfolio — as Venture Partner she supports Ysios's life-sciences portfolio across its funds.
