Background

Clayton Heijman is the founder, Group CEO, and Director of Privium Fund Management. Privium says he started the firm during the 2008 financial crisis to support investment-management initiatives; its team page describes Privium as supporting 30+ teams worldwide with more than $3 billion in AUM and full-scope investment-management licenses in London, Amsterdam, and Hong Kong.

Before founding Privium, Heijman worked at Kas-Bank and merchant bank MeesPierson. In 1994 he joined Goldman Sachs as an Executive Director in Equity Finance & Prime Brokerage. In 1998 he moved to Fortis as Managing Director to set up Prime Fund Solutions, and after leaving in 2006 he worked as Managing Director at Credit Agricole-Calyon.

Heijman studied at Dutch H.E.A.O. in Utrecht, graduating in 1983, and earned an MBA from Webster University in Leiden in 1986 with an emphasis in marketing and management. He also founded Darwin Platform, which provides middle-office services to hedge funds, private equity funds, investors, and other alternative asset managers.

For direct startup investing, the clearest verified vehicle is Human+ Fund. Human+ says it was initiated by Heijman, Frank de Man, ZonMw, Reumafonds, and two family offices to accelerate biomedical discoveries into products and treatments. Privium’s own CSR page says Human+ was established in 2010 and co-founded by Frank de Man of EATRIS and Privium CEO Clayton Heijman.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Human+ Fund invests around a translational-medicine thesis: biomedical discoveries often fail to reach market because the path from research to product development lacks expertise and funding.
  • The fund targets biomedical technology, diagnostics, and pharmaceutical products, with the stated aim of bringing research outcomes to market faster for patient benefit while generating returns for funders.
  • Human+ uses a co-financing model: biomedical research institutes, including university medical centers, select high-potential projects; selected projects are transferred into spin-off companies; research-institute partners commit co-funding; Human+ may then co-fund.
  • Project quality is screened through EATRIS technical and translational feasibility assessment, including reimbursement likelihood.
  • Human+ explicitly excludes basic scientific research and projects whose main purpose is extending existing patents; projects need a clear translational objective.
  • Privium’s broader operating focus is not direct capital allocation. In an Opalesque interview, Heijman said Privium supports managers through compliance/regulation, risk management, and operations, and “does not allocate capital” to avoid conflicts.

Notable Investments

  • Spatium Medical — Erasmus MC spin-off developing next-generation smart insufflation technology for laparoscopic surgery; Human+ lists it as a project, and in December 2023 / September 2024 Spatium announced a €5 million financing round.
  • Bcon Medical — Designs electromagnetic navigation systems intended to improve cancer surgery; listed by Human+ as an investment project.
  • CRCBioScreen — Develops early diagnostic colorectal-cancer screening technology using its multiFIT biomarker approach; listed by Human+ as an investment project.
