Background
Clifford K. Chiu is a Wall Street veteran with more than 40 years in investment banking and alternative asset management. He is a retired Partner of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR), where he founded and led capital raising and investor relations for the Asia-Pacific region until 2014. Earlier in his career he held senior leadership roles at JPMorgan Asset Management and at Salomon Smith Barney/Citigroup, working across New York, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. He is widely regarded as a pioneer in Asia-Pacific investment banking and institutional fundraising.
In July 2014, Neuberger Berman appointed Chiu — then recently retired from KKR — as Senior Adviser to Neuberger Berman Asia, where he worked across the Asia-Pacific region to help the firm expand its Asian institutional client base (the source of the "@nb.com" email and Hong Kong phone number). In 2015 he joined Vista Equity Partners as a Senior Advisor, a role he continues to hold; he previously served on Vista's Executive Committee, advising on governance, strategic initiatives, institutional relationships, and talent development.
Chiu sits on numerous corporate boards, largely across Vista's enterprise-software portfolio and related companies, including Finastra, Securonix, TRG Screen, Acquia, Allvue Systems, Critical Start, and LogicMonitor. He is also active in civic and nonprofit governance in Austin, Texas — where he is now based — serving with the Ascension Seton Foundation, Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, St. James Settlement, the Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Austin Airport Advisory Commission, and on the University of Texas at Austin's International Leadership Council.
Educationally, Chiu holds a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is recognized as a mentor to hundreds of students and was named one of the "Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business" in 2025.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- His professional center of gravity is late-stage private equity and corporate governance (via Vista Equity Partners and KKR), not high-volume seed investing.
- Individual angel activity is limited and opportunistic — public records show a single recorded angel investment, in education software.
- Sector affinity skews toward enterprise/technology software and financial services, mirroring the Vista portfolio boards he serves on (Finastra, Securonix, TRG Screen, Acquia, Allvue, Critical Start, LogicMonitor).
- Self-described identity: "a trusted steward of capital, governance, and institutions — Wall Street veteran and pioneer in Asia-Pacific investment banking and alternative asset management."
- Note: the "Angel Investor / Seed Round" label from the stub appears to reflect a single seed-stage deal rather than an active seed thesis; treat his primary value as board-level expertise, capital-raising, and Asia-Pacific institutional access.
Notable Investments
- Go Pangea — Educational software startup; his one publicly recorded angel investment (latest recorded investment dated January 19, 2017).
- *(Board director rather than investor)* Finastra, Securonix, TRG Screen, Acquia, Allvue Systems, Critical Start, LogicMonitor — enterprise-software companies within or adjacent to the Vista Equity Partners portfolio where he serves on the board.
