Background
Conrad Oberbeck is an entrepreneur and former investment professional. He was a Senior Associate at Saratoga Investment Corp. (roughly 2018–2021), the New York–based business development company managed by Saratoga Investment Advisors and affiliated with Saratoga Partners, a middle-market private equity firm founded in 1984 (originally within Dillon, Read & Co.). In that analytical role he evaluated investments and met with founders of the businesses the firm backed. Earlier, he worked in the institutional investment sales group at Cushman & Wakefield, giving him experience across both corporate and real-estate investing verticals. He has also been listed as a former Summer Principal at Windsong Global.
Before his finance career, Oberbeck was a standout athlete. He played Division I men's lacrosse at Yale University, where he earned recognition as an Ivy League Champion, All-American, Academic All-Ivy, Team MVP, and Senior Class Award finalist. He then played professionally in Major League Lacrosse for the New York Lizards (2015 MLL champions) and the Atlanta Blaze. He is a Yale graduate (History major).
In 2021, Oberbeck co-founded and became CEO of Hangobi, a plant-based functional beverage brand aimed at dehydration recovery, wellness, and active lifestyles. He has since spoken publicly about entrepreneurship and building a category leader in the recovery/performance beverage space through interviews with IdeaMensch, Authority Magazine, and Founder's Courier. Note that Conrad is distinct from Christian ("Chris") Oberbeck, the Chairman, CEO, and Managing Partner of Saratoga — a different individual.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Brings an investor's analytical lens combined with founder/operator experience — he has been on both sides of the table, evaluating deals at Saratoga and now building a consumer brand at Hangobi.
- Background spans corporate private equity/credit (Saratoga) and real estate (Cushman & Wakefield), so his interest areas skew toward consumer products, real estate, and diversified middle-market opportunities.
- Emphasizes team and people in how he operates: "I am constantly evaluating how I can get the most out of my team, and how they can get the most out of Hangobi and me."
- Values respect and relationship-building in negotiation: "With an emphasis on respect and dignity for whoever is across the proverbial table from you, you are sure to discover many unknown and unexpected benefits."
- Note: Saratoga Partners' institutional strategy is middle-market buyouts, distressed/negotiated structures, and preferred equity — not classic seed venture. Conrad's seed/angel activity appears tied to his personal operator profile rather than a formal Saratoga seed program.
Notable Investments
- Hangobi — Functional, plant-based recovery beverage brand; co-founded and led as CEO since 2021 (his own venture, not a passive investment).
- *(As a Saratoga Investment Corp. Senior Associate, he worked on the firm's middle-market debt and equity investments, but no specific individual deals are attributed to him in public sources.)*
