Background

Craig Nikrant is an Operating Partner in Gryphon Investors' Heritage Group, the firm's operationally focused arm that partners with the management teams of portfolio companies. He first connected with Gryphon as CEO of Washing Systems, a Gryphon portfolio company, which he led through an expedited and successful sale to Kao International. He joined Gryphon in 2018 as an Exclusive Executive Advisor, helped shape the firm's investment thesis in specialty materials and chemicals, and in 2020 became a full-time Operating Partner. In this role he works closely with portfolio-company management to maximize operating and financial performance and assists Gryphon deal teams in sourcing, evaluating, and executing investments.

Nikrant brings roughly 40 years of leadership experience across commercial, technology, and manufacturing functions in global specialty-materials companies. Before Washing Systems, he was Senior Vice President and President of the Global Specialty Engineered Materials division at PolyOne (now Avient), where he is credited with doubling the business to about 1,100 employees across 18 sites. Earlier, he spent roughly 17 years at General Electric, holding leadership roles at GE Plastics — including General Manager of the Specialty Film and Sheet business — and earning Six Sigma master black belt certification. He began his career at 3M as an Account Manager in the Industrial Specialties Division.

He holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Bowling Green State University and is a graduate of GE's Crotonville Management Institute. His board work includes current Gryphon portfolio appointments at Pacur, Techmer PM, and Vivify Specialty Ingredients, and prior service at Kano Laboratories. Community involvement has included Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Ohio (2007–2016) and serving as a trustee of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission (2016–2019).

Note: The stub description of Craig Nikrant as an "Angel Investor" making "Seed Round" investments appears to be inaccurate. Gryphon Investors is a ~$10B AUM middle-market private equity firm, and Nikrant operates as an Operating Partner and portfolio-company executive/board member, not a seed-stage angel. The "General Manager" label most likely traces to his former GE Plastics general-manager role.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Works within Gryphon's Heritage Group model: partner with existing management teams and create value through "strategic and operational enhancements" rather than financial engineering.
  • Deep specialization in specialty materials and chemicals and broader industrial growth — Nikrant helped build Gryphon's thesis in this vertical.
  • Firm targets market leaders in the middle market "with strong underlying demographics and robust demand drivers."
  • Control-oriented: Gryphon takes control or shared-control positions ($50M–$500M equity) in companies up to ~$80M EBITDA, or non-control junior capital ($5M–$25M).
  • North American headquarters is a firm requirement.
  • Nikrant's personal value-add is operational: driving growth, organizational effectiveness, and manufacturing/commercial performance — often stepping directly into CEO/board roles at portfolio companies.

Notable Investments

  • Techmer PM — Producer of advanced engineered materials and masterbatch/color/additive products; Gryphon portfolio company where Nikrant serves on the board and was named CEO (2025).
  • Vivify Specialty Ingredients — Specialty ingredients platform acquired by Gryphon; Nikrant serves on the board.
  • Pacur — Specialty medical and packaging materials company; Nikrant serves on the board.
  • Washing Systems — Textile-laundry chemistry and services company where Nikrant was CEO; led its sale to Kao International (his entry point to Gryphon).
  • Kano Laboratories — Maker of Kroil penetrating oils and specialty lubricants; prior Nikrant board role.
