Background
Curtis S. Lane has more than 40 years of experience investing in and advising healthcare and life-sciences companies. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania (1979) and an MBA from Penn's Wharton School (1980). Early in his career he worked at Smith Barney and later led the healthcare investment banking group at Bear Stearns before striking out on his own.
In 1999, recognizing the value a dedicated healthcare-focused financial-services firm could offer, Lane founded MTS Health Partners, where he remains Founding Partner. He subsequently founded the private-equity arm that became WindRose Health Investors (formerly MTS Health Investors), a healthcare-specialist PE firm that today manages over $5 billion. WindRose closed its Fund V at $705 million, and its portfolio has included businesses across pharma services, diagnostics, revenue-cycle management, and specialty pharmacy.
Lane retired from WindRose Health Investors effective April 1, 2022. He is now Founder and Executive Chair (and Chair of the Investment Committee) of Elements Health Investors, a private-equity firm led by healthcare-industry veterans that invests in small and mid-sized companies with proven products or services addressing high-priority healthcare needs.
Beyond his investing career, Lane is Founder and Chairman of Navigator Healthcare, Inc., which helps substance-use-disorder patients access effective, evidence-based treatment. He serves on the boards of companies such as Carisk Partners and Guardian MD, is active with the American Jewish Committee (Board of Trustees/Governors), is a Founder's Council member of the United States of Care, and has chaired the Executive Advisory Board of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in New York City with his wife, Stacey.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through healthcare-specialist private equity, not angel/seed — targeting established small and mid-sized healthcare businesses with proven products or services.
- Thesis centers on companies that "address high-priority healthcare needs," reflecting a deep-domain, sector-specialist approach honed over 40+ years in healthcare banking and investing.
- Sector breadth within healthcare: provider and disease-management services, CRO/CDMO and pharma/biotech services, diagnostic imaging, specialty pharmacy, revenue-cycle management, and healthcare data/IT.
- Deal style favors control and growth-equity positions where operational and strategic value can be added and businesses scaled toward a strategic or sponsor exit.
- Values evidence-based, mission-driven healthcare models — reflected in his founding of Navigator Healthcare to improve substance-use-disorder treatment access.
