Background

Dallin Bills spent roughly a decade (2015–2025) as an investor at Battery Ventures, a large multi-stage technology investment firm managing several billion dollars in assets. He rose through the ranks in Battery's San Francisco office, where he focused on early- and growth-stage B2B SaaS. Battery promoted him to Vice President in September 2018 (having joined the firm in 2015) and then to Principal in February 2023, a promotion the firm announced publicly alongside a batch of other team elevations.

Before venture capital, Bills was an operator. He served as Director of Sales and Operations at Lucid Software (Lucidchart), the cloud-based diagramming company, in 2014–2015, and earlier participated in Intuit's rotational development program (2011–2014), working on products including QuickBooks. He also completed a summer analyst stint in Credit Suisse's investment banking division in 2010.

Bills earned a BS in Business Finance from Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Management, where he graduated with a 3.85 GPA and served as student body president. His operating-plus-finance background shaped a hands-on, go-to-market-oriented style with founders.

In 2025, Bills stepped away from venture investing to become CEO of IconicCare, a Salt Lake City-based healthcare company founded in 2022 by Dr. Christian Morris (a physiatrist who serves as Founder and CMO). IconicCare delivers post-acute ancillary medical services — physiatry, telehealth, psychiatry, and post-discharge follow-up — to skilled nursing and post-acute facilities across multiple U.S. states. Bills has said he made the move after a personal experience with his father's unmanaged pain in a skilled nursing facility, writing that he "wanted to build something that would change the way patients experience care in their most vulnerable moments." Because of this transition, his Battery contact details (email/phone) and his active VC investing role are no longer current.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invested primarily in B2B / enterprise SaaS and cloud infrastructure, spanning early-stage seed/Series A through growth-stage Series B and beyond, under Battery's multi-stage model.
  • Comfortable across a wide check range (~$250K to $60M) given Battery's fund scale, but concentrated on software companies with strong go-to-market motion — reflecting his operator background in sales and product.
  • Geographically centered on the SF Bay Area and Boston/New England, the two hubs of Battery's U.S. presence.
  • Themes he wrote and thought about publicly included AI governance/compliance tooling ("the rise of the AI governance stack"), marketing measurement in a privacy-first / post-cookie world, and when to build on platforms like Salesforce — signaling interest in application software, compliance/GRC, and data infrastructure.

Notable Investments

  • AuditBoard — audit, risk, and compliance (GRC) SaaS platform; Bills wrote a detailed retrospective on the company's journey and pivot. A notable Battery success story.
  • Cube — FP&A / financial planning software for finance teams.
  • Kojo — construction materials procurement and supply-chain software.
  • Mews — cloud-based property management system (PMS) for hotels and hospitality.
  • Narvar — post-purchase customer experience and order-tracking platform for retailers.
  • MX — financial data and money-experience platform (fintech infrastructure).
  • Hummingbird — compliance and anti-financial-crime (AML/KYC) case-management software.
  • Check Technologies — payroll infrastructure / payroll-as-a-service; Battery seed investment he was involved with beginning around 2021.
