Background

Damian Graham is Group Chief Investment Officer at Challenger Limited. Challenger’s leadership page lists him in that role, and Challenger describes itself as an investment management firm focused on providing customers with financial security for a better retirement. His appointment was announced in November 2025, with the role effective January 2026, as a newly created position integrating investment activity across Challenger Life and Funds Management.

Before Challenger, Graham was Chief Investment Officer at Aware Super, where he served from 2016 and led the investment function for about 12 years. Aware Super’s 2025 annual members’ meeting transcript describes him as having led the investment team for 12 years and built the fund’s investment capability. During his tenure, Aware Super grew into one of Australia’s largest superannuation funds, with cited assets of about A$205 billion in 2025 and A$210 billion by late 2025/early 2026.

Earlier in his career, Graham was Chief Investment Officer at StatePlus from 2012 to 2016. He previously headed Private Portfolio Management at Macquarie Group after serving as Head of Investment in that division, and he also held senior roles at J.P. Morgan Investment Management and Norwich Investment Management.

Graham holds a Bachelor of Economics with Honours from La Trobe University, a Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning from FINSIA, and is a CFA charterholder.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Graham’s work is institutional rather than angel investing: the verified record points to superannuation, retirement income, listed markets, and private/alternative assets, not seed-stage angel checks.
  • At Aware Super, his stated objective was long-term member outcomes: “We believe we can do well for our members, while being a true ‘force for good’ in our community.”
  • He has emphasized strong and sustainable long-term returns, risk appetite discipline, and board/investment-committee alignment rather than short-cycle venture-style investing.
  • Aware Super’s research-led capital allocation under Graham focused on areas with supportive dynamics, investability at scale, and potential for strong long-term returns.
  • Thematic focus areas cited during his Aware Super tenure included industrial property, land registries, affordable housing, the low-carbon transition, healthcare, digital infrastructure, renewables, new technologies, and growth capital for small and medium-sized businesses.
  • He favored growing direct-investment capability where it helps source and acquire assets with attractive long-term opportunity.
  • In private markets, Graham described Aware Super’s allocation above 25% as an “ideal risk-reward ratio,” while also favoring a hybrid model combining external providers with internal capabilities.
  • At Challenger, his remit is to bring investment teams under unified leadership across Challenger Life and Funds Management, with a focus on investment excellence and retirement-income outcomes.
