Background
Dan Calano is a two-time search-fund entrepreneur — an operator who raises capital to buy a single established company and run it as CEO, rather than a portfolio investor. He holds a B.S. from Vanderbilt University (Human & Organizational Development, with a corporate-strategy minor) and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. He began his career as a consultant at Deloitte Consulting (2010–2013) and later worked at Keurig Green Mountain, Inc. (roughly 2015–2017) before launching his own search.
In 2017 Calano founded Blue Range Capital LLC, a Boston-based search fund, and served as its Principal. Through Blue Range he identified and acquired Utility Cloud, a cloud-based operations-management software platform for operators of critical utility infrastructure, becoming its CEO in 2019. Under his leadership Utility Cloud grew its footprint serving utilities and asset-intensive industries with workflow automation, asset-health tracking, and compliance reporting.
In September 2022, AMCS Group — a global sustainability and operations software company — acquired Utility Cloud to expand its digital utilities solutions. Calano stayed on through the transition, commenting at the time that "AMCS is the ideal catalyst to accelerate the value we bring to our customers and end markets." He remained CEO through roughly 2024.
For his "second chapter," Calano launched Grouper Companies LLC (Principal, 2024–present) as his second search/acquisition vehicle and, backed by search-fund investor Pacific Lake Partners, acquired Fleetflo (formerly HCH Transportation Advisors) — a firm providing licensing, registration, and compliance services to large North American motor carriers. He became CEO of Fleetflo in 2025.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Model: Entrepreneurship-through-acquisition (ETA) — Calano buys one established, profitable business at a time and operates it as CEO, rather than writing minority checks across a portfolio. Founders seeking seed equity are not his typical counterparty; business *owners looking to sell* and searchers/operators are.
- What he targets: Durable small businesses with real cash flow, often in vertical software, B2B services, and compliance-heavy or asset-intensive end markets — the two he has bought (Utility Cloud, Fleetflo) both sit in operations/compliance software and services.
- How he operates and evaluates: On the *Think Like an Owner* podcast he emphasized approaching risk "as a calculated system rather than gut-driven decision-making," and stressed managing customer-concentration risk and intellectual-property clarity as key diligence issues learned from Utility Cloud.
- What makes him lean in (as an acquirer): Sellers who value transparency; he describes building trust with sellers "through transparency and action," hiring deliberately, and reducing organizational friction as core to his playbook.
Notable Investments
- Utility Cloud — Cloud-based operations-management SaaS for utility and critical-infrastructure operators. Acquired via Blue Range Capital ~2019 (Calano became CEO); sold to AMCS Group in September 2022. His flagship, and successful, search-fund exit.
- Fleetflo (formerly HCH Transportation Advisors) — Licensing, registration, and compliance services (IRP) for large motor carriers, plus fleet-management technology. Acquired ~2024–2025 through Grouper Companies with backing from Pacific Lake Partners; Calano is CEO.
