Background
Dan Chen is a Los Angeles–based investment-banking and private-equity professional turned early-stage investor and mentor, with a career spanning roughly 25 years and transactions reportedly totaling more than $5 billion in value. He earned a B.A. in Economics from Yale University (attended ~1994–1999). He began his career as an investment banker at Merrill Lynch & Co. in New York and San Francisco, and spent time on the investment team at TPG Capital before moving into technology and media advisory.
He served as a Vice President in the media and software practice at Montgomery & Co. in Los Angeles — the origin of his "[hidden]" address — providing M&A and capital-raising advisory to software, digital-media and internet-services companies. He later led corporate development at a Los Angeles family-office-backed holding company. In April 2012 he joined Los Angeles investment bank Siemer & Associates (which also operated the venture arm Siemer Ventures) as Managing Director.
When Siemer & Associates was acquired by China's CEC Capital Group in 2016, Chen became Managing Director and Head of the US Office and Technology, Media & Telecom (TMT) group, acting as the chief liaison between CEC's US and Chinese operations, a role he held until around 2022. In 2022 he moved into an operating role connected to Lotus (Lotus Domaine Management / Strategic Board Member of the Lotus Innovations Fund), and more recently has been associated with Unified Compliance in a strategic finance and operations capacity.
Throughout, Chen has been active in the early-stage community as a long-running mentor at Mucker Capital / MuckerLab (since ~2013), where he advises founders on enterprise sales, pricing, and security/compliance, and takes founder meetings. He holds FINRA Series 63 and 79 securities licenses.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests and advises at the seed stage as an individual angel, drawing on a banking/PE background rather than a traditional fund.
- Sector interests mirror his deal career: software & services, digital media, internet/consumer, healthcare IT, and enterprise IT/telecom.
- Values that translate into what he can help with: enterprise go-to-market, pricing strategy, and security/compliance — the topics he mentors on at Mucker.
- Comfortable with US–China cross-border situations and M&A/exit pathways given his advisory background.
- Note: Chen has not published a formal written thesis; the above is inferred from his stated focus areas and mentor activity rather than a direct quote.
