Background
Dan Kim is a Chicago-based private-markets professional with roughly 25 years in financial services, more than 15 of them specializing in infrastructure and real-asset investment. He holds a BA in Economics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Early in his career he worked on the investment side as a research analyst for a portfolio manager and long/short hedge fund, then as a vice president of research and analysis at a venture capital firm, and as a manager of research and analysis at a private equity firm.
In 2007 he joined EnnisKnupp, the large Chicago-based institutional investment consulting firm (which merged with Hewitt Associates to become Hewitt EnnisKnupp in 2010, and was later folded into Aon). There he became an Associate Partner in the firm's Global Private Equity & Infrastructure Group, sat on the group's Private Equity Investment Committee, and spent roughly a decade leading the firm's infrastructure research and client-advisory work globally. During this period he was regarded as one of the leading institutional investment-consultant experts in the real-asset space, particularly on infrastructure and infrastructure debt, advising large pension funds, endowments, and foundations.
In September 2017 Kim moved to the manager/fundraising side, joining IFM Investors as a Business Development Director on its North American team, responsible for developing new business and managing significant institutional relationships across all asset classes (infrastructure, debt, listed equities, and private capital). In 2022 he joined Campbell Lutyens as a Managing Director in its Chicago office, responsible for relationships with infrastructure-focused institutional investors across North America and part of the firm's Global Relationship Group.
Since August 2024, Kim has been a Managing Director on EQT Group's Client Relations & Capital Raising team, based in Chicago, continuing to focus on institutional investor relationships for one of the world's largest private-markets (private equity and infrastructure) firms.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Focus is on infrastructure and real assets — including infrastructure debt — and, more broadly, private equity / private markets at the institutional fund level, not startup equity rounds.
- His work centers on the LP/GP relationship and capital-formation side: matching institutional investors (pensions, endowments, foundations) with private-markets fund strategies, and on the research/advisory side, evaluating and recommending managers.
- At EnnisKnupp/Aon he served on a Private Equity Investment Committee, giving him a diligence-driven view of what makes a fund strategy investable for large institutions.
- Described in industry announcements as "one of the leading institutional investment consultant experts in the real asset space, particularly regarding infrastructure and infrastructure debt."
Notable Investments
- Kim is a fundraising/IR and investment-consulting professional rather than a direct startup investor, so he is not associated with a public list of named portfolio-company deals.
- His "portfolio" is better understood as institutional mandates and fund relationships built at Aon/EnnisKnupp (advising ~$35B+ of client private-equity commitments across 35+ clients during that era), IFM Investors (global infrastructure funds such as the IFM Global Infrastructure Fund), Campbell Lutyens (North American infrastructure LP relationships), and EQT (private equity and infrastructure fund capital raising).
