Background

Dan Matkin is a Partner at NorthEdge, a regional lower mid-market private equity firm headquartered in Manchester with offices in Leeds and Birmingham. Before joining NorthEdge, he spent eight years at PwC, working across the firm's assurance and corporate finance divisions, latterly in the Corporate Finance team in Manchester where he advised on significant transactions across the North of England.

Matkin joined NorthEdge as an Investment Manager in 2016, recruited to help deploy the firm's then newly closed fund. He was subsequently promoted to Director and, in the firm's December 2025 promotions round, elevated to Partner alongside Liam May and James Hales. In his Partner role he takes on greater responsibility for leading transactions and helping shape NorthEdge's investment strategy, working within the firm's new business (origination) team.

NorthEdge manages more than £900m across a series of regionally focused funds and has invested over £780m into around 49 companies. The firm targets established, profitable businesses in the lower mid-market rather than early-stage startups — a materially different profile from the "angel investor / seed round" description in the original stub, which appears to be inaccurate. In February 2026 the British Business Bank committed £60m as a cornerstone investor in NorthEdge Fund IV, which will write £8m–£50m equity cheques into founder-led UK businesses.

Matkin was named Rising Star of the Year at the 2021 North West Rainmaker Awards, recognising his dealmaking early in his NorthEdge career.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in established, profitable lower mid-market businesses, typically with turnover above £5m and profit above £0.5m — not pre-revenue or seed-stage companies.
  • Equity cheques of roughly £8m–£50m (Fund IV), historically £2m–£45m, for either majority control or significant minority stakes.
  • Deal types include management buy-outs, development/growth capital, equity release, and buy-and-build roll-up strategies.
