Background
Daniel Cane is a serial software entrepreneur best known as the co-founder and co-CEO of Modernizing Medicine (ModMed), a Boca Raton–based specialty-focused electronic health record and healthcare IT company he started in 2010 with dermatologist Michael Sherling, MD. Under Cane, ModMed has grown to roughly 1,400 employees and raised more than $332 million in total funding, including a $231 million investment led by Warburg Pincus in May 2017. He has repeatedly appeared on The Healthcare Technology Report's "Top 50 Healthcare Technology CEOs" list (2022, 2023, 2024) and was named EY Entrepreneur of the Year in 2015.
Before ModMed, Cane co-founded his first company, CourseInfo LLC, during his senior year at Cornell University. That venture merged into Blackboard Inc. in 1998, making Cane a co-founder of the education-technology giant. He helped raise over $100 million in venture capital and take Blackboard public on the NASDAQ in 2004; the company was later acquired by Providence Equity Partners for $1.6 billion in 2011. Cane left Blackboard in early 2009 and briefly founded Kadoo, a cloud digital-asset storage startup that raised about $5 million before being sold.
Cane graduated from Cornell University in 1997 with a B.S. in Applied Economics and Management, and attended Lake Worth High School in Florida. He is deeply embedded in the South Florida civic and startup ecosystem: he was elected Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Florida Atlantic University (2013) and has served on the boards of the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium and the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce. He lives in Boca Raton with his wife and three children.
As an angel investor, Cane deploys personal capital into early-stage software companies, frequently ones tied to his home region and to sectors he knows firsthand — healthcare, education technology, and enterprise software. His most visible commitment is to Honorlock, a Boca Raton online-proctoring company where he has served as Chairman of the Board since 2018.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests personally at the pre-seed and seed stage in software/SaaS companies.
- Sector gravity toward areas where he has operating depth: healthcare IT, EdTech, and enterprise applications, with some fintech exposure.
- Strong South Florida / Boca Raton bias — he backs and often actively governs (board seats) companies in his own ecosystem.
- Values founders building durable, workflow-embedded software for regulated or specialty markets — mirroring the "purpose-built for specialists" playbook he used at ModMed.
- Publicly documented investments are relatively concentrated and hands-on (e.g., a board chairmanship) rather than a high-volume spray-and-pray angel approach.
Notable Investments
- Honorlock — Boca Raton online exam proctoring / EdTech company; Cane has been Chairman of the Board since 2018.
- SocialRadar — location-based social/information services startup (listed among his angel investments).
- ClassWallet — EdTech/fintech platform for managing education spending (cited in aggregator portfolio records).
- Kadoo — cloud digital-asset storage service he founded (~2009–2011); raised ~$5M and was later sold (founder rather than passive investor).
