Background

Dan Carroll is a co-founder and managing partner of Brooklands Capital Strategies, a San Francisco–based capital-raising and strategic advisory firm he established in 2014 with Peter McMillan. Brooklands operates as a FINRA/SIPC-registered broker-dealer serving alternative asset managers and companies across the growth spectrum — private equity, growth equity, credit, hedge funds, real assets, biotech and venture — advising on primary and secondary offerings, direct and co-investments, investor relations, and liquidity events. The firm is based at 1170 Gorgas Avenue in San Francisco's Presidio.

Carroll is widely regarded as a pioneer of the Asian private equity industry. He joined TPG Capital in 1995, where he co-founded the firm's Asian investing business — originally Newbridge Capital — and served as a Partner and Co-Managing Partner (Asia). Over roughly 15 years he built the Asia-based investment team to about 40 professionals across seven offices and was responsible for raising five investment funds representing approximately $7 billion in committed capital. Before TPG/Newbridge, he spent about nine years with Hambrecht & Quist (H&Q) Asia Pacific, another early mover in Asian private equity.

Carroll holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard University and an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Outside of finance, he is active in the nonprofit world — he has served as Board Chair of Reading Partners, on the board of the Blum Center for Developing Economies at UC Berkeley, and as Treasurer/board member of Healdsburg Jazz, where he has lived for more than two decades.

*Note on the stub data: public aggregator listings tag Carroll as an "angel investor" making seed-stage checks (roughly two disclosed investments). That personal angel activity is real but small relative to his primary career, which centers on institutional private equity and, today, capital-raising advisory through Brooklands. Specific angel portfolio companies could not be independently verified and are therefore not listed below.*

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Primary vehicle is advisory, not a fund. Through Brooklands Capital Strategies, Carroll's work is raising capital and providing strategic advisory to alternative asset managers rather than deploying a discretionary fund — spanning PE, growth equity, credit, hedge funds, real assets, agriculture, biotech and venture.
  • Deep specialization in Asia and financial-services/banking turnarounds, reflecting a career built on control investments in the region.
  • Individual angel activity is early-stage/seed, per aggregator data (approximately two investments); check sizes and specific criteria are not publicly disclosed.
  • Track record orientation: distressed and control opportunities where operational and governance value can be added over multi-year hold periods (the model behind his landmark bank investments).

Notable Investments

  • Korea First Bank (KFB) — As a leader of Newbridge/TPG's Asia business, helped orchestrate the 1999 acquisition of a 51% stake (~$500M) — the first foreign control of a South Korean bank. Newbridge sold KFB to Standard Chartered in 2005 for ~$3.3B, realizing roughly $1.6B (more than 3x the original investment).
  • Shenzhen Development Bank (SDB) — Part of Newbridge's 2004 investment that marked the first foreign acquisition of a controlling management stake in a Chinese state-owned bank; a landmark transaction in Chinese banking.
  • TPG/Newbridge Asia funds — Responsible for raising five investment funds totaling ~$7 billion in committed capital during his ~15 years building the Asia platform.
  • *(Individual seed/angel investments are referenced by aggregators but could not be verified by name and are omitted to avoid fabrication.)*
