QVT (QVT Financial LP / QVT Family Office)

Biotech & healthcare, technology (including quantum computing and photonics), energy, financials, shipping/offshore, and opportunistic/special-situation and capital-structure trades

Primarily United States, with global multi-strategy mandates

Background

Daniel Collins is a Partner and the Chief Operating Officer of QVT Financial LP, the New York–based investment manager founded in 2003 by Daniel Gold. Public filings and profile databases show Collins has been affiliated with QVT as a limited partner since January 1, 2004 — effectively since the firm's earliest years — making him one of its long-tenured senior principals. As COO he sits on the operational/management side of the firm alongside the investment principals, overseeing the firm's non-investment functions.

QVT itself grew out of a proprietary trading group that Daniel Gold established inside Deutsche Bank in the 1990s (Gold, a Harvard physics graduate, previously traded at Bear Stearns and Daiwa Securities before building "the QVT Group" at Deutsche Bank, then spinning it out in 2003). The firm became well known as a multi-strategy, fundamentally driven hedge fund managing well over $1 billion in assets — roughly $2.1 billion in discretionary assets per its March 2024 Form ADV — investing across biotech, technology, energy, financials, and shipping/offshore industries, with an emphasis on idiosyncratic, capital-structure and special-situation strategies executed with proprietary software.

In 2018 QVT "refocused" as the QVT Family Office, concentrating on investing the capital of the QVT principals and a small group of private investors, which allowed the firm to take longer-horizon and more concentrated positions. In this structure, senior partners such as Collins, alongside managing members Dan Gold, Nick Brumm, Arthur Chu and Tracy Fu, help run an organization whose core team has worked together for more than 20 years.

Detailed public biography for Collins specifically (education, pre-QVT roles) is not disclosed on QVT's website or in the standard databases, and has been intentionally left out here rather than guessed.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Firm-level, not personal-angel, capital. QVT deploys the capital of its principals and a handful of private investors; there is no evidence Collins operates a personal angel checkbook. Approaches should be framed as engaging QVT the institution.
  • Complexity and capital structure as the edge. QVT has historically sought situations "where financial engineering or capital-structure complexity creates an edge," rather than pre-revenue, science-only bets — its self-description emphasizes "innovative, fundamental and idiosyncratic trading strategies."
  • Biotech & healthcare across public and private markets. QVT is a recognized long-time investor in biotech; it was an early/large backer of Pharmasset and Medivation and *seeded and remains the largest investor in* Roivant Sciences.
  • Deep, sometimes majority, private-tech positions. QVT states it has been "an early, and at times, majority investor in private technology companies in the U.S.," implying appetite for concentrated, control-oriented stakes rather than small minority seed checks.
  • Long holding horizon. Post-2018 the family-office structure is explicitly designed for "longer-horizon positions," so patient, multi-year theses fit better than quick-flip pitches.

Notable Investments

  • Roivant Sciences — Biotech holding company; QVT seeded it (2014, via then-partner Vivek Ramaswamy) and remains its largest investor; parent of Axovant and Myovant.
  • Axovant Sciences (NYSE: AXON) — Roivant subsidiary; CNS/neurology drug development (public listing).
  • Myovant Sciences (NYSE: MYOV) — Roivant subsidiary; women's health/endocrine therapeutics (public listing).
  • Pharmasset — Early/large QVT biotech investment (hepatitis-C antiviral developer, later acquired by Gilead).
  • Medivation — Early/large QVT biotech investment (oncology; later acquired by Pfizer).
  • QuEra Computing — Neutral-atom quantum computing; QVT is an early backer that significantly increased its stake in QuEra's ~$230M financing announced February 2025 (QVT's Arthur Chu is a board member).
  • Lightsynq — Photonics/quantum-interconnect startup that emerged from stealth with $18M Series A in November 2024.
  • GridPoint — Energy-management/grid-optimization company; QVT participated in its ~$45M raise, its most recent disclosed investment as of March 31, 2025.
  • Bacio di Latte — Brazilian gelato chain; a QVT portfolio company (consumer/retail).
  • MP Materials — Rare-earth mining/materials company; QVT partner Michael Rosenthal serves as its COO, reflecting deep QVT involvement.
