Background
Daniel Darling is an Australian-born, San Francisco–based investor who co-founded the firm now known as focal — originally launched as Darling Ventures. Before becoming an investor, he spent roughly seven years in global marketing roles across Tokyo, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. He was on the founding team of Mobile Interactive Group, an advertising-technology startup that was acquired by NASDAQ-listed Velti in a deal valued at roughly $60M; at Velti he focused on marketing strategy, industry research, and corporate strategy.
Around 2013–2014, Darling identified an opportunity to give Australian investors access to U.S.-based, early-stage technology deals and made the switch from operator to investor, founding Darling Ventures as a San Francisco seed fund initially focused on early-stage mobile application startups. He has described being inspired after watching a small ~8-person startup beat his much larger employer in a pitch contest — a moment that crystallized for him the speed and "power" of startups. Over time the firm built a track record of writing the very first check for technical, domain-expert founders.
In 2023, Darling rebranded Darling Ventures to focal (focal.vc), repositioning the firm explicitly as a pre-seed lead for "AI-native" founders. He co-runs the firm with Managing Partner Pascal Unger, supported by Sydney Wasikowski (Head of Platform & Operations). focal invests out of a fund in the ~$30–35M range and has 40+ companies in its portfolio.
Educationally, Darling holds a degree in Economics and Social Sciences from The University of Sydney, with executive education from Stanford Graduate School of Business, UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, and Harvard Business School (Private Equity & Venture Capital).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Be the first check, at inception. focal leads (or co-leads) pre-seed rounds and prides itself on backing founders extremely early — the firm states roughly 75% of its investments are made within one month of a startup incorporating, sometimes before incorporation.
- AI-native builders. The current thesis is backing "AI-native builders at inception with speed and conviction," targeting "the most asymmetric opportunities in AI" with "unmatched speed and intensity."
- Domain experts using software/data to transform an industry — the long-running specialty Darling has carried from Darling Ventures into focal.
- Concentration over spray-and-pray. The strategy emphasizes leading rounds with meaningful ownership (~10%) and reserving capital and bandwidth to support a focused portfolio.
- Conviction, not credentials. Darling has said he invests on "quality, not brand name" — backing founders on reasoned conviction and 5-year market views rather than media buzz or accelerator prestige, and engaging deeply and early before deals get competitive.
- Stated ethos: "Tomorrow belongs to those who can hear it coming" — and the firm's self-description that it thrives "where others whisper 'too early.'"
- Hands-on GTM support. Portfolio companies get access to focal's "GTM Circle" — a community of 100+ founders and 200+ go-to-market operators — reflecting Darling's marketing background.
