Background
Daniel ("Dan") Raynor co-founded The Argentum Group in 1988 alongside Walter Barandiaran, and the two have run the firm together ever since — making Argentum one of the longest-standing private equity firms operating under the same original leadership. As Managing Partner, Dan leads new investments, co-manages the firm, serves as an active board member across portfolio companies, and acts as an advisor to Argentum's CEOs. He brings more than 25 years of private equity experience and has led nearly 40 investments for the firm, sitting on a comparable number of boards of directors.
Before founding Argentum, Dan was Senior Vice President, Corporate Finance at Steinberg & Lyman (a healthcare-focused venture capital firm now associated with HealthCare Ventures, LLC). Earlier in his career he served as Assistant to the CEO & Chairman of ICN Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (later reorganized as Valeant Pharmaceuticals), an experience that seeded his continued interest in healthcare and pharmaceutical services investing.
Dan earned a B.S. in Economics from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. His stated areas of expertise are technology-enabled services, business services, healthcare & pharmaceutical services, and logistics. Outside of investing, he describes himself as "an endurance junkie" who cycles, runs, skis, and hikes — and notes having run two miles of the NYC Marathon alongside Lance Armstrong.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Fills the gap "between early-stage venture capital and later-stage growth equity" by backing bootstrapped entrepreneurs who have built real businesses without institutional capital.
- Targets companies with roughly $5M–$25M in revenue that are seeking $5M–$15M of equity capital.
- Invests primarily for minority ownership stakes, but can structure majority deals or buyouts when the situation calls for it; transaction types include growth equity and recapitalizations.
- Uses capital to accelerate organic growth, fund add-on acquisitions, and generate shareholder liquidity — Argentum has supported 200+ add-on acquisitions across its portfolio over its history.
- Concentrates on B2B software/SaaS, tech-enabled services, healthcare IT/pharma services, fintech, specialty staffing, business services, and transportation & logistics.
- Positions itself as a founder-friendly, value-added partner (named to Inc.'s "Founder-Friendly Investors" list for six consecutive years) rather than a pure financial buyer.
