Background

Daniele Rocha is a San Francisco native who came into venture capital from the art world rather than finance. In 2018 she launched Babel Missions, a division of BABEL Ventures focused on the "investor experience" in Silicon Valley — curating the relationship, hospitality, and community side of the firm's work with founders and limited partners. BABEL Ventures itself was founded in 2016–2017 by Bárbara "Bá" Minuzzi, billed as the first Latina to start a venture firm in Silicon Valley, and is built around early-stage consumer-biotech investing.

Before BABEL, Rocha spent roughly a decade as an art dealer, manager, curator, and consultant in the Bay Area's contemporary and public-art scene. She was a founding partner of the Ian Ross Gallery in San Francisco and independently curated exhibitions and corporate art programs for clients including Gensler, Facebook/Meta, WhatsApp, and Infinity Towers. In 2015 she founded Rocha Art, a mobile curatorial platform and public-art initiative responsible for 30+ public murals, and she is a partner at the public-art advisory Diptych Design.

Alongside her commercial work, Rocha co-founded the 1 Brush Initiative, a nonprofit focused on youth arts education and community mural sponsorship in the city. Her stated path into venture was to translate years of experience as an art dealer — building trust with collectors, high-net-worth families, and technology executives — into founder and investor relationships at BABEL. Her role is relationship- and experience-driven; she is not documented as running BABEL's core investment committee, which is led by Minuzzi with partners Ryan Bethencourt and Marcelo Valente.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through BABEL Ventures, which describes itself as "the first VC check in many portfolio companies" and backs "driven, impact-oriented entrepreneurs based in Silicon Valley."
  • Thesis centers on "harnessing biology as a technology" — practical, consumer-facing biotech that delivers social and environmental impact, rather than top-down thematic bets.
  • Stage: pre-seed and seed, with selective Series A participation; strong preference to be early / among the first institutional capital in.
  • Sub-sectors: food & agriculture technology (alternative proteins, cell-cultured meat and seafood), health & wellness, personal care & beauty, and sustainable materials / green chemistry.
  • What earns a "yes": a strong founding team with a unique, compelling market vision and a sustainability angle — BABEL explicitly says it bets on founders over themes.
  • Rocha's specific lens (via Babel Missions) is founder experience and relationships — expect the community, hospitality, and trust-building dimension to matter, not just the deck.

Notable Investments

  • Finless Foods — cell-cultured / plant-based seafood (alt-protein).
  • Mission Barns — cultivated (cell-based) meat and fat.
  • Nabis — cannabis wholesale logistics platform; reported to have raised ~$33M.
  • Cue Health — molecular diagnostics; later went public (IPO).
  • Forever Labs — stem-cell storage / longevity biotech.
