Background
Daoping Wang is a Founding Partner at China Growth Capital (华创资本, also branded CGC / CGCVC), a Beijing-based early-stage venture firm. He joined the firm in 2012 and has focused on mobile internet and social, B2B online trading platforms, marketplaces, and consumer/lifestyle-services investing. In recent years he has become one of the firm's most public voices on AI-era investing.
Before CGC, Wang built a career spanning engineering and venture investing. He began as a senior engineer at Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), one of China's largest chip foundries. He moved into investing in 2008 with the SVB Capital China Fund, then served as a senior associate/investment manager at WI Harper Group (中经合集团), where he led early-stage internet and mobile-internet investments. He also co-founded a cross-border e-commerce startup before joining CGC — giving him operating as well as investing experience.
Wang holds a B.S. in Physics (reported as bio-physics) from Nanjing University and an MBA from Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB / 长江商学院).
His stated investing philosophy emphasizes discipline over hype: he has argued that discovering value is not the hard part — the hard part is *holding* to value, staying calm in the face of market "风口" (hot trends), and sticking with things that have long-term value.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests at the seed / early stage in Chinese startups, historically across marketplaces, B2B trading platforms, travel/lifestyle services, and consumer internet; currently very active in applied AI.
- On AI, he will back general-purpose AI applications, AI hardware, consumer AI products, and B2B AI tools that have a clear commercialization path and rapid user feedback.
- On AI, he won't invest in foundational large language models — citing unclear business models, huge capital requirements, and structural advantages that favor incumbents.
- Prizes early commercialization and differentiation: *"commercialization doesn't mean you have to make money on the first day, but you at least have to prove that the product 'works.'"*
- Warns that AI has almost no tolerance for weak products: *"Many AI products are abandoned by users as soon as they are launched. It's very cruel."* Because incumbents copy good prototypes quickly, he wants founders who can execute product, commercialization, and resource coordination simultaneously.
- Core discipline: *value discovery is easy; value conviction is hard — stay calm in front of hot trends and hold what has long-term value.*
