Background
David “Dave” Gonzales is a commercial banker, investment banker, entrepreneur, and restructuring advisor with more than 40 years of business experience. Caliber Advisors says much of his banking career was spent at Bank of America and Wells Fargo, where he held executive roles driving commercial and corporate lending units across multiple states.
His work centers on middle-market companies with operating or capital challenges. Caliber describes his experience as spanning large-company banking, starting and selling middle-market companies, and serving as CEO and CRO for closely held companies in workout situations. His advisory style is operationally hands-on: cash usage plans, capital raises, business-model review, strategy, and translating those plans into execution.
Gonzales graduated from the University of Southern California with a BBA in accounting. Caliber’s site lists him as a FINRA registered representative with Series 63, Series 79, and Series 24 designations; his LinkedIn profile also ties his education to USC’s Marshall School of Business and describes a banking career beginning with the Comptroller of the Currency and ending as a division EVP at Wells Fargo.
Before Caliber Advisors, Gonzales was publicly announced in July 2012 as a managing director at CKS Advisors, where he oversaw turnarounds and restructurings involving creditors, debtors, and equity holders in financially distressed situations. Current public materials place him at Caliber Advisors, not CKS Advisors.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Focuses on situations where “traditional financing solutions are not appropriate or available,” especially middle-market companies that need debt structuring, capital sourcing, restructuring, or a bridge to a longer-term capital partner.
- Caliber sources capital from a network of more than 750 private lenders and private equity firms, matching financing needs to capital providers by transaction type, industry, and structure.
- The firm’s approach favors highly targeted capital outreach: Caliber says the key is matching an “apple financing need” with an “apple financing supplier.”
- Gonzales’s stated workout orientation is to repair and restart a business where possible rather than push liquidation or a depressed-value sale.
- Caliber does not issue private or public securities; when a securities issuance is appropriate, it says it refers in an investment bank specializing in Reg D, Reg A, or similar structures.
- No primary source found verifying Gonzales as an active seed-stage angel investor, despite the stub data.
Notable Investments
- Fresh Acquisitions LLC / Buffets LLC: Restaurant group operating brands including Furr’s, Old Country Buffet, HomeTown Buffet, Ryan’s, Fire Mountain, and Tahoe Joe’s; Caliber Advisors served as financial advisor to the official committee of unsecured creditors in the 2021 Chapter 11 cases, and Gonzales later served as liquidating trustee.
- CKS Advisors restructuring and turnaround practice: Gonzales was announced in 2012 as a managing director overseeing turnarounds and restructurings for creditors, debtors, and equity holders in distressed situations.
- No publicly verified angel or seed-stage startup portfolio investments were identified from the sources reviewed.
