Background

Dave Pearce is a Deputy Managing Partner at Azimuth Capital Management, a North American private equity firm founded in 2000 that operates under the "Navigating Energy" brand. (Azimuth was formerly known as KERN Partners, renaming in 2015.) The firm has invested in 38 companies over its history, generating more than $4.0 billion in realizations — including the IPOs of MEG Energy, Cobalt International Energy, and Seven Generations Energy — and reached roughly $5.9 billion in peak assets under management. It maintains offices in Calgary and the San Francisco Bay Area (Menlo Park), with additional senior presence in Vancouver, Houston, and the Netherlands.

Pearce brings more than 35 years of energy-sector experience as a senior executive and independent director in Canada and internationally. Most recently before his investing career at Azimuth, he served as President and CEO of Northrock Resources Ltd., previously an operating division of Unocal Corp. Earlier in his career he held management roles at Fletcher Challenge Canada, Amoco Canada, and Dome Petroleum, spanning exploitation and exploration, corporate development, and M&A.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Honours) and has served as a Governor of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP). His role at Azimuth centers on representing the firm as a director across its energy portfolio companies and serving as an independent director on several public boards.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through Azimuth's institutional energy platforms rather than as an individual angel; capital is deployed via funds and a co-investment program, plus in-house development platforms Azimuth Development Partners (ADP) and ADP AI Supply Chains (ADP AISC).
  • Current firm thesis is focused on critical minerals processing, baseload clean power and storage, and low-carbon fuels — explicitly positioned to serve AI supply chains that "enable the next decades of growth."
  • Historically an upstream oil & gas investor; the firm describes itself as "building forward-thinking energy and infrastructure companies since the turn of the millennium."
  • Backs experienced operating teams building or scaling energy/infrastructure assets — consistent with Pearce's own operator-executive background and his board-level engagement with portfolio companies.
