Background

Lord David Alliance, born Davoud Alliance in Kashan, Iran on June 15, 1932, was an Iranian-British industrialist, philanthropist, Liberal Democrat peer, and angel investor. He moved to Manchester in 1950 as a young textile entrepreneur after beginning work as a teenager in Tehran’s bazaar. Biographical accounts note that he arrived in Britain with very limited capital and built his early career by trading textile samples and later operating and buying a mill.

Alliance became best known for building major British textile and retail businesses. He founded and chaired Coats Viyella, which became one of Europe’s leading textile companies, and was founder and former chairman of N Brown Group, the mail-order and online retail business behind brands such as JD Williams. He stepped down as chairman of Coats in 1999 and was associated with N Brown for decades.

He was appointed CBE in 1984, knighted in 1989, and made a life peer in 2004 as Baron Alliance of Manchester. UK Parliament records show he sat in the House of Lords as a Liberal Democrat from July 1, 2004 until his retirement on March 21, 2025. He was also a major philanthropist, including a £15 million donation that led to Manchester Business School being renamed Alliance Manchester Business School in 2015.

As an angel investor, Alliance backed UK and Israeli technology companies including Similarweb, SparkBeyond, Hexa, WorkAngel, OneDome, Woo.io, and Uptime. He died on July 18, 2025, aged 93.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Alliance’s disclosed technology investments show a preference for platform businesses with strong data, software, marketplace, or digital-distribution characteristics.
  • He repeatedly backed Israeli technology companies, including Similarweb, SparkBeyond, Hexa, and Woo.io, across seed and growth rounds.
  • His investment history shows follow-on behavior: Startup Nation Finder lists follow-on investments in Similarweb, Woo.io, and SparkBeyond, and reports an investment follow-on ratio of 2.25.
  • He invested beyond seed when conviction was established, participating in Similarweb’s Series D and Series E rounds and SparkBeyond’s Series A and Series B rounds.
  • Alliance’s own publicly quoted philosophy was broader than venture investing: “Businesses are just as responsible to their communities as individuals, regardless of their size,” he told Alliance Manchester Business School in 2015. That aligns with his philanthropy and his backing of education, workplace, and productivity-oriented companies.
