Background
David S. Bovenizer is the co-founder and CEO of Lionheart Industrial Group LLC, an industrial manufacturing holding company he started in May 2004 under the original name Lionheart Ventures. The "lionheartventures.com" email domain and the legacy "Lionheart Ventures" name are the source of the angel-investor / seed-round label in the stub data; in practice Bovenizer is an M&A and operations executive who acquires and builds established industrial manufacturers, not a startup seed-stage angel. (A separate, unrelated San Francisco VC firm also called "Lionheart Ventures," founded by David Langer, should not be confused with his business.) Over his career he reports completing more than 30 transactions totaling over $2 billion in value, spanning leveraged acquisitions, cross-border M&A, debt financings, public debt offerings, joint ventures, acquisitions, and divestitures.
Before Lionheart, Bovenizer was Vice President, North America for Zomax Incorporated (NASDAQ: ZOMX), a media-manufacturing and supply-chain services company, where he expanded operations into Mexico and Tennessee and grew the customer base to include Dell and Microsoft. Earlier he held a progression of leadership roles at The Dyson-Kissner-Moran Corporation (DKM) — President, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Vice President of Finance, Director of Marketing, and Director of Operations — and designed DKM's "DAY ONE!" MBA management-development program.
He earned his MBA from Columbia Business School, graduating Beta Gamma Sigma, and graduated magna cum laude from Lehigh University with a BA in Industrial Psychology. Bovenizer frequently frames Lionheart as the continuation of a family entrepreneurial legacy: his maternal grandfather, industrialist Charles V. Schaefer, Jr., acquired and turned around struggling manufacturers beginning in the 1950s, and his paternal great-grandfather, George W. Bovenizer, Sr., was a partner at the investment bank Kuhn, Loeb & Co. in the 1920s. He notes Lionheart has surpassed the combined inflation-adjusted peak EBITDA of all his grandfather's companies.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Acquires control stakes in established industrial manufacturers and builds them into platform businesses — a private-equity-style "buy, hold, and grow organically and through add-ons" model, not minority venture checks.
- Targets niche, engineered-products manufacturers across four core platforms: combustion components/systems, specialty pumps, pneumatic actuators & valves, and precision aerospace / gas-turbine engine components.
- Pursues organic growth plus strategic add-on acquisitions to "enhance manufacturing business value"; has cultivated roughly eleven acquisitions across its platform units.
- Comfortable with complex deal structures — leveraged acquisitions, cross-border M&A, public debt offerings, joint ventures, and divestitures — reflecting his banking and operations background.
- Founder-/family-business friendly, drawing explicitly on a multi-generational family heritage of turning around and transforming struggling industrial companies.
