Background
C. David Moll is the founder and managing director of Infield Capital, an early-stage venture capital firm he launched in 2008 in Boulder, Colorado. Before becoming an investor, Moll built his reputation as an operator: he served as CEO of Boulder-based Webroot Software from April 2002 to about January 2007, piloting the internet-security company through its highest-growth years and helping make it one of the largest privately held software companies in the United States. He continued to serve on Webroot's board of directors after stepping down as CEO. Earlier in his career he held roles including Vice President of Business Development at DataPlay, Inc. and Director of National Account Management at MatchLogic.
Moll earned an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management (1997–1999) and is an undergraduate alumnus of Baldwin Wallace College. His operating success was recognized with an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and companies he led earned Deloitte's Technology Fast 50 and Fast Company's "Fast 100" recognition.
At Infield Capital, Moll applies an investment model that pairs financial capital with hands-on human capital, drawing on his years in manufacturing and high-tech operating roles. The firm concentrates on early-stage clean technologies for the transportation industry — the things "between the key and the wheel" that reduce reliance on oil and cut greenhouse-gas emissions. Moll has taken active board and advisory roles at portfolio companies, including Pinnacle Engines and BASiC 3C, and has been affiliated with cleantech-industry organizations such as the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association. He is also listed as a member investor with the Bridge Angel Investors network.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Stage: Backs seed and early-stage companies, typically at the point where deep technical risk meets first commercialization.
- Sector: Clean technology focused on transportation and "future powertrain" innovation — powertrain technologies, alternative fuels, stored energy, mobile energy transmission, lightweight and new materials, nanotechnology, and advanced manufacturing.
- Approach: Infield describes a "strong belief in the entrepreneur" rooted in operating experience, and "an investment model that uniquely couples financial capital with human capital" — i.e., active, hands-on involvement rather than passive checks.
- What earns a yes: Hard-tech founders solving oil-dependence and emissions problems in transportation, where Moll's manufacturing/operating background can add value beyond money (board seats, business-development help).
- Geography: Primarily U.S.-based companies, with a Boulder/Colorado cleantech-ecosystem anchor.
