Background
David Caillard has more than 30 years of global fundraising experience across alternative investments, spanning private equity, debt, credit, infrastructure and real estate. He began his financial career at Kleinwort Benson in 1986 and went on to work at Macquarie Bank (in both London and Sydney), Banque Indosuez (Bahrain) and UBS. In 2000 he co-founded the Alternatives Group at Dresdner Kleinwort Benson (DrKW), and in 2005 he co-founded the placement firm First Avenue Partners.
In 2006 David founded Karroo Capital, a London-based independent placement agent and strategic advisory firm that supports and advises alternative-investment managers and corporate entities in planning and executing institutional capital raises. Its investor base includes pension funds, insurance companies, family offices, banks, private banks, foundations, endowments and sovereign wealth funds. The firm was recognised by Acquisition International around 2015–2016 in its M&A / placement-agent awards.
From 2009 to 2015, David served as an Independent Director on the Supervisory Board of Fondinvest, a European pioneer in private equity fund-of-funds and secondaries with over €2.5bn in AUM, prior to its sale to a consortium of private buyers. Earlier in life, he served as an officer in the Royal Air Force Regiment between 1981 and 1986.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Karroo acts as a placement agent and advisor, not a fund — it raises institutional capital for alternative-investment managers and private companies rather than writing checks itself.
- Services cover primary, secondary and private placements, corporate capital raisings, and corporate advisory work.
- Product focus is squarely on alternatives: private equity, private debt/credit, infrastructure and real estate.
- Stated selectivity, in the firm's own words: Karroo "only works with management firms and teams that are not only ambitious and innovative, but that operate with the highest standards of integrity, transparency and responsiveness to the needs of investors."
- The firm positions itself on "a unique combination of deep financial markets and product experience, investor market knowledge and execution ability."
Notable Investments
- No verifiable startup/portfolio investments were found. As a placement agent, Karroo Capital facilitates institutional fund and corporate capital raises rather than holding a disclosed portfolio of direct equity investments. Any specific mandates are not publicly listed.
