Background

David Cockfield is a veteran Canadian portfolio manager and one of the more familiar faces on BNN Bloomberg's *Market Call*, where he has appeared regularly for years to discuss markets and share stock picks. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), a longtime member of the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts, and has twice served as a director of that society. He earned a BA in Economics from Queen's University and an MBA from the University of Toronto.

Cockfield began his investment career at the Bank of Canada, working in the Bank's open-market bond-trading operations. He was later promoted to Officer of the Bank, managing the Bank's pension fund portfolio and reporting to senior management, before being transferred to the Bank's Toronto branch as a liaison with Canada's largest financial institutions. He subsequently ran the Investment Division at one of Canada's largest trust companies.

He then co-founded an investment counselling firm, where he served as President and Director for roughly 20 years. In 1999 he joined one of Ontario's oldest investment counselling firms as Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager, remaining there about nine years before moving to Northland Wealth Management. Northland is an independent, family-owned multi-family office founded in 2011, serving Canadian families with an estimated ~$2.5 billion in assets under management from offices in Oakville, Ontario and Calgary, Alberta; it has been recognized as a leading North American family office (under $2.5B AUM).

At Northland, Cockfield works as Managing Director & Portfolio Manager focused on Canadian equities and ETFs. His public commentary consistently reflects a conservative, capital-preservation-oriented style built around blue-chip dividend payers and diversified, low-cost fund exposure.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Public-markets investor, not a startup backer. His work is managing diversified portfolios of listed Canadian equities and ETFs for wealthy families — not writing seed checks into private companies.
  • Capital preservation first. He has publicly advised investors to "preserve cash and avoid high-volatility securities," particularly heading into Fed tightening cycles, which he calls "normally a difficult time for equities."
  • Cautious, contrarian read on valuations. He has described North American equity markets as "tired and in need of a rest or a correction," noting markets can ignore geopolitical risk for extended periods.
  • Blue-chip Canadian dividend names — banks, energy, and diversified asset managers — are core holdings; he has favored companies trading at reasonable multiples (e.g., highlighting Brookfield Asset Management at ~11x earnings).
  • Heavy use of low-cost / low-volatility ETFs to build diversified, lower-beta exposure (short-term corporate bond, low-volatility Canadian equity, and broad index funds).

Notable Investments

  • Brookfield Asset Management (BAM) — global alternative asset manager (real estate, utilities, energy, timber); highlighted as a top pick at a low ~11x P/E.
  • Bank of Nova Scotia / Scotiabank (BNS) — core Canadian bank holding, discussed on air.
  • Baytex Energy (BTE) and Ovintiv (OVV) — Canadian oil & gas names discussed as energy exposure.
  • iShares Core S&P/TSX Capped Composite Index ETF (XIC) — broad Canadian equity market exposure.
  • BMO Low Volatility Canadian Equity ETF (ZLB) — low-beta Canadian equity, tilted to financials, staples, energy.
  • BMO Low Volatility US Equity ETF (ZLU) — low-volatility U.S. exposure, discussed on air.
  • iShares Canadian Short Term Corporate + Maple Bond Index ETF (XSH) — short-duration corporate bond holding for stability.
  • Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets All-Cap Index ETF and iShares Core MSCI All-Country World ex-Canada Index ETF — for global diversification.
  • Past picks have included Shopify (SHOP) and SNC-Lavalin (now AtkinsRéalis).
