Background
David Grainger is a British scientist-turned-investor and one of the most prolific biotech company-builders in Europe. He earned a degree in Natural Sciences (Biochemistry) from the University of Cambridge in 1989 and a PhD in vascular cell biology from Cambridge in 1992, followed by post-doctoral research in the British Heart Foundation Smooth Muscle Cell laboratory. He was appointed a Principal Investigator in Cambridge's Department of Medicine in 1997, where he led an internationally recognised research group, published more than 80 first-author papers in journals including *Nature*, *Science* and *Nature Medicine*, and is named on over 150 patents and patent applications.
Grainger's entrepreneurial career began alongside his academic work. He founded FingerPrint Diagnostics (2001), which merged with SmartBead Technologies to form the molecular-diagnostics company Pronostics in 2006, and Funxional Therapeutics (2005), an anti-inflammatory drug company spun out of his Cambridge lab where he served as Chief Scientific Officer until its sale to Boehringer Ingelheim in 2012. He also established the outsourced drug-development firms Total Scientific and RxCelerate. Over his career he has co-founded roughly 28 biotechnology companies.
He joined the life-sciences team at Index Ventures in 2012 as a Venture Partner. In February 2016 he co-founded Medicxi, the spin-out that took over the legacy life-sciences portfolio of Index Ventures, together with Francesco De Rubertis, Kevin Johnson and Michèle Ollier. At Medicxi he holds the titles of co-founder, Venture Partner and Chief Scientific Advisor, championing the firm's "asset-centric" model of building single-product companies.
From October 2021 to 2024 Grainger served as Chief Innovation Officer at Centessa Pharmaceuticals (the company formed by merging ten Medicxi-backed asset-centric companies), sitting on its executive leadership team while continuing in a consulting role at Medicxi. He is also CEO of Methuselah Health Ltd., a proteomics/longevity research company, co-founded The Foundation Institute for 21st Century Medicine, and has served as Executive Chairman and co-founder of the oncology company Divide & Conquer. He is a long-time industry commentator, writing for Forbes.com and formerly blogging under the pen name "DrugBaron."
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Backs asset-centric biotech: lean, single-product companies built around one well-defined drug candidate or therapeutic hypothesis, rather than broad multi-asset platforms — the model Medicxi is known for.
- Invests primarily at the seed / company-creation stage, frequently founding or co-founding companies himself out of academic science and incubating them.
- Strong emphasis on capital efficiency and reaching clear, value-inflecting clinical or proof-of-concept milestones quickly; many companies are designed to be acquired by pharma once the asset is de-risked.
- Sector focus on therapeutics across biopharma — including immunology/inflammation, oncology, coagulation, and longevity/proteomics — drawing on his own drug-discovery background.
- Looks for rigorous, differentiated science and strong founding hypotheses; as a working scientist with 80+ first-author papers and 150+ patents, he applies deep technical due diligence and is persuaded by mechanistic clarity rather than hype.
