Background

David Grochow is the Chief Financial Officer — and, per Crunchbase, also Chief Compliance Officer — at RedBird Capital Partners, the New York private investment firm founded in 2014 by Gerry Cardinale. In this role he is responsible for all financial activities for the firm, including accounting and investor-reporting operations, risk management, and tax planning. RedBird manages more than $14 billion in assets across sports, media & entertainment, and financial services, so Grochow's mandate covers fund finance, LP reporting, and compliance rather than deal sourcing or investment decisions.

Before RedBird, Grochow spent more than eight years at Irving Place Capital, a middle-market private equity firm, most recently as its CFO. Prior to Irving Place, he worked for six years as a Controller in the Private Equity Group at The Blackstone Group. Earlier in his career he held roles at Geller & Co. and as a Senior Accountant at Arthur Andersen, giving him a career built almost entirely in private-equity fund finance and public accounting.

Grochow earned a B.B.A. from the Goizueta Business School at Emory University and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Note: Grochow is RedBird's finance and compliance chief, not a deal partner or angel investor. The points below describe the firm's investment approach (which shapes any capital he administers), not a personal thesis he has publicly stated.
  • RedBird positions itself as a strategic investor and company builder in three core "ecosystems": Sports, Media & Entertainment, and Financial Services.
  • The firm favors long-term value creation over short-term financial engineering, targeting "premium intellectual property" such as sports franchises, entertainment studios, and media brands.
  • In financial services specifically, RedBird has deployed over $1.8 billion through a dedicated team focused on Insurance & Insurance Distribution and Asset & Wealth Management.
  • Typical structure is growth equity, buyouts, and platform builds alongside founders and entrepreneurs — not early-stage/seed venture bets.

Notable Investments

  • Fenway Sports Group — RedBird holds a stake in the group that owns the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool FC.
  • A.C. Milan — RedBird acquired the Serie A football club (2022).
  • Paramount Skydance — RedBird backed David Ellison's Skydance in its combination with Paramount.
  • Artists Equity — Co-financing venture with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
  • YES Network (Yankees Entertainment & Sports) — Regional sports network investment.
  • United Football League (UFL) — Spring football league, formed from the merger of the USFL and XFL.
  • All3Media — Television production group (RedBird IMI, its joint venture with Abu Dhabi's IMI).
