Background

David Holmgren is an institutional investment executive best known for building and leading Hartford HealthCare’s internal investment office. Public biographies and conference materials state that he became Chief Investment Officer of Hartford HealthCare in 2010, after serving as Principal Investment Officer at the Connecticut State Treasury and as Executive Vice President at UBS / UBS Diversified Strategy Index. Earlier conference materials credit him with more than 28 years of traditional and alternative asset-class experience; his LinkedIn profile now describes more than 38 years of investment leadership experience.

At Hartford HealthCare, Holmgren oversaw pension, endowment, and related healthcare-system assets. In a 2022 Fiftyfaces interview, he described the portfolio as roughly $5 billion, run by a nine-person team, with responsibilities across asset strategy, manager selection, liquidity, trading, and portfolio positioning. He also said the institution’s healthcare mission required a higher liquidity profile than a typical long-horizon endowment might otherwise prefer.

Holmgren’s education includes a BA in Economics from Denison University and an MBA from Columbia Business School. His LinkedIn profile and contact-data aggregators also reference Yale University, but the specific program was not clearly verified in primary public materials.

Hartford HealthCare outsourced its investment office to Morgan Stanley in 2022. Markets Group reported that Holmgren’s investment-office track record closed on June 30, 2022, after the fund posted a 1.3% fiscal-year return for the year ended June 30, 2022, while the endowment-and-foundation peer universe was down roughly 11%. The same report said the fund had grown from about $1 billion at inception to more than $4 billion and annualized 9.7% over ten years.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Holmgren’s investing approach emphasizes intensive research, risk awareness, and hands-on manager monitoring. Institutional Investor reported that Hartford’s team visited every manager before investing and checked in with managers as often as every six weeks.
  • His stated risk-management philosophy is research-led: “Knowledge is the finest risk management tool,” he told marcus evans in 2012.
  • He has favored active, differentiated managers where Hartford could build close relationships and, in some cases, co-invest alongside high-conviction external managers.
  • In hedge funds, Hartford stayed active while many institutions reduced allocations; in 2020 its hedge-fund program returned 23%, according to Holmgren in Institutional Investor.
  • He has emphasized private credit and asset-backed infrastructure as tools to create income and inflation protection without taking excessive duration risk.
  • His responsible-investing approach appears return-first rather than screen-first. In the Fiftyfaces interview, he said Hartford’s renewable-power exposure reflected low risk tolerance and regulatory safety more than a simple ESG screen.
  • Holmgren has been public about backing diverse-owned and women-owned managers when the investment case is strong, including Hartford’s role as the $50 million anchor investor in Xponance’s $400 million GP-stakes-style fund for diverse managers.
