Background
David Levenson is a Toronto-based private-markets investor who spent roughly two decades at Brookfield Asset Management before co-founding his own firm. He joined Brookfield in 2004 and rose through progressively senior roles, ultimately serving as Managing Partner in the Private Equity group and Global Head of Brookfield Special Investments — the firm's ~US$3.5 billion special-situations/opportunistic strategy that he helped launch and lead. Earlier at Brookfield he was head of the firm's U.S. private equity activities and served as Chief Investment Officer of its Infrastructure group, where he focused on building out the transportation platform. Across his Brookfield career he was involved in the deployment of more than US$14 billion of equity capital, with deep experience in mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, and restructurings.
Levenson departed Brookfield in March 2023. In July 2025 he and fellow Brookfield veteran Bahir Manios (Brookfield's former CFO) publicly launched Genesis Financial Asset Management, a Toronto-based private asset-management platform. Genesis provides capital, strategic solutions, and partnerships to businesses, targeting investments of up to US$1 billion primarily in infrastructure, financial services, insurance, and healthcare. Rather than raising a traditional blind-pool fund, Genesis raises a separate capital pool for each deal and holds positions with no fixed exit deadline — a permanent/patient-capital, deal-by-deal model.
He is an active corporate director. He was appointed an independent director of Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. in February 2024 (supporting its transition to a pure-play regulated utility) and has served on the board of Chorus Aviation. He has held seats on multiple multi-billion-dollar company boards over his career.
Levenson holds a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University (1996) and an MBA from Harvard Business School, and he is a CFA charterholder. Outside finance, he is a co-founder of The Performance Lab–Tampa, a musculoskeletal and brain-injury rehabilitation clinic.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Genesis Financial Asset Management on a deal-by-deal basis, raising a dedicated capital pool for each transaction rather than a single commingled fund — allowing tailored, long-hold ownership with no forced exit date.
- Check size: individual transactions of up to ~US$1 billion.
- Sectors: infrastructure, financial services, insurance, and healthcare — areas mapping closely to his Brookfield infrastructure and special-situations background.
- Provides "capital, strategic solutions and partnerships to businesses" — i.e., flexible/structured capital for companies in transition, restructuring, or growth, not early-stage venture bets.
- Draws on a Brookfield-honed skillset in M&A, corporate finance, restructurings, and special situations, having previously led a ~US$3.5B special-investments strategy and deployed US$14B+ in equity.
Notable Investments
- Brookfield Special Investments fund (~US$3.5B) — launched and led by Levenson; Brookfield's opportunistic/special-situations vehicle providing structured capital to companies.

- Brookfield Infrastructure transportation platform — as CIO of Brookfield's Infrastructure group, he focused on growing its transportation assets.
- (Ongoing) Genesis Financial, launched July 2025, had not yet disclosed named portfolio deals at the time of research.
