Background
David Magdol is President and Chief Investment Officer of Main Street Capital Corporation, a Houston-based, publicly traded Business Development Company that provides customized long-term debt and equity capital to lower middle market companies. He is a member of the firm's executive and investment committees and serves as group head of Main Street's lower middle market (LMM) investment strategy, with responsibility for the firm's overall investment strategy. He has been President since 2018 and Chief Investment Officer and Senior Managing Director since 2011; he previously served as Vice Chairman from 2015 to 2018.
Magdol is one of Main Street's founding members, having joined the firm in 2002. Prior to Main Street's 2007 IPO, he held Senior Managing Director and other executive roles across several Main Street predecessor funds and entities. Since 2020 he has additionally served as President and Chief Investment Officer of MSC Income Fund, Inc. (NYSE: MSIF), an affiliated fund.
Before Main Street, Magdol was a Vice President in the investment banking group at Lazard Frères & Co. Earlier, he managed a portfolio of private equity investments for the McMullen Group, a private investment firm/family office of Dr. John J. McMullen (former owner of the NHL's New Jersey Devils and MLB's Houston Astros). He began his career in the structured finance services group of JP Morgan Chase. He holds an undergraduate degree from Skidmore College (1992).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in established lower middle market businesses — typically $10M–$150M in revenue and $3M–$20M of EBITDA — rather than early-stage or venture companies.
- Provides a "one-stop" capital solution, combining debt and equity: common and preferred equity, senior secured term debt, unitranche, and subordinated debt in a single financing.
- Backs transactions such as management buyouts, recapitalizations, ownership/liquidity events for family- and founder-owned businesses, growth and acquisition financing, and refinancings.
- Looks for companies with stable, positive cash flow, a proven competitive/market position, and a strong, established management team that will continue running the business.
- As a permanent-capital BDC, Main Street emphasizes long-term, patient investing and the structural flexibility of the BDC model — a point Magdol has publicly highlighted as an advantage in the lower middle market.
Notable Investments
- Nello Industries, LLC — ~$36.9M investment in June 2024 to facilitate a management-led buyout; received follow-on capital in 2025–2026 to support acquisitions.
- Gamber-Johnson Holdings, LLC — LMM portfolio company that received follow-on investment support for strategic acquisitions (announced March 2026).
- RFG AcquireCo, LLC (Revolution) — LMM portfolio company that received follow-on investment support for acquisitions (announced March 2026).
- Main Street deployed roughly $300M in total lower middle market portfolio investments during 2025, reflecting the firm's active LMM origination pace under Magdol's strategy leadership.
