Background

David Porter is a Founding Partner of Apposite Capital, a London-based private equity firm that invests exclusively in healthcare and life sciences. He co-founded the firm in 2006 and has built it into a specialist pan-European investor focused on the smaller end of the healthcare buyout and growth market, providing both capital and operational expertise to help healthcare businesses scale. He brings more than 30 years of experience in private equity and investment banking to the role.

Before founding Apposite, Porter spent a formative period at Nomura's Principal Finance Group, where he worked on several large leveraged buyouts, including Angel Train Contracts and the Married Quarters Estate (Annington Homes) transactions. He subsequently founded and headed Nomura International's healthcare investment and corporate finance groups, where he built a track record of strong life-sciences returns — experience that directly seeded Apposite's sector-focused strategy.

Beyond investing, Porter has been active in UK healthcare policy and industry bodies. He has served as a member of the UK Department of Health's Healthcare Reform reference group, participated in a government efficiency review on social care, contributed to the Myners' review of pre-emption rights, and held a board position with the BioIndustry Association (BIA). He is a recurring speaker on healthcare venture capital and investment, including a healthcare-venture-capital talk hosted at Imperial College London and appearances on healthcare-investment panels and summits.

Under his leadership, Apposite has raised a succession of dedicated healthcare funds — including Apposite Healthcare Fund II (£144.5m, 2018) and Apposite Healthcare III (£200m, 2022) — and reports that portfolio companies have grown revenues and employment by an average of more than 20% per year across its investments.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Sector-exclusive: Invests only in healthcare and life sciences — Porter positions Apposite among the "specialist sector-focused managers" for whom investor appetite is growing.
  • Stage & structure: Growth capital and control/majority buyouts (MBOs, MBIs, BIMBOs, replacement and hybrid capital) in SMEs — often acting as the first institutional capital into founder- or family-owned healthcare businesses.
  • Check size: Roughly £10–20m per company in the Fund II generation, scaling with each larger fund (Fund III at £200m).
  • Sub-sectors: Digital health & IT, medical products & devices, life sciences & pharmaceuticals, and healthcare services (including social care and specialist care providers).
  • Geography: UK and continental Europe.
  • What makes them say yes: High-growth, high-impact businesses where Apposite's sector network of healthcare leaders and operating partners can accelerate scaling; management-team backing and founder/retirement transitions. In Porter's words on the Fund II close: *"It reflects the quality of our team and track record as well as investors' growing appetite for specialist sector-focused managers."*
