David Renton

David Renton is an institutional investment and finance leader who currently serves as Official Fellow and Estates Bursar at All Souls College, University of Oxford, a role he took up in 2021. In that capacity he is responsible for the college's endowment — reported at roughly £600 million and spanning UK property and a global investment portfolio — and for major estates projects, including a development to expand academic space on Oxford's High Street near the Covered Market, described by the college as the first significant increase in academic space since Nicholas Hawksmoor built the Great Quad some 300 years ago.

Before moving to Oxford, Renton spent a decade (joining in 2011) leading finance and investment at Guy's and St Thomas' Charity, since rebranded as Guy's & St Thomas' Foundation — one of the UK's largest hospital/health endowments. As Director and later Executive Director of Finance & Investment he was responsible for an endowment of around £800 million and oversaw the finance and operations teams supporting roughly £30 million a year of charitable spending. Under his tenure the endowment was deployed to drive health impact through investments in financial markets, property, and a growing portfolio of health-impact funds, including social-impact commitments in areas such as homelessness.

Renton began his career in corporate finance / investment banking in London, spending around 25 years in the field, including at Schroders and at Hawkpoint Partners, where he advised small and medium-sized companies and private equity houses on mergers and acquisitions. He was educated at the University of Cambridge (MA, Natural Sciences / Chemical Engineering, 1983–1986) and holds an MA from the University of Oxford.

Alongside his executive roles he has held a range of governance positions: Treasurer of the Association of Charitable Foundations, Chair of the Large Charities Special Interest Group at the Charity Finance Group (CFG), a director of Cydar (a medical device spin-out), an external/independent member of Nesta's Investment Committee, a trustee of the Oxford Playhouse, and a member of the Remuneration Committee of Downing College, Cambridge.

• Invests as a steward of large institutional endowments (£600m–£800m range), not as an angel or venture investor — the "Angel Investors / Seed Round" label in some contact databases appears to be a misclassification.
• Pursues a blended objective of financial return plus mission impact — at Guy's & St Thomas' the endowment was explicitly used "to drive health impact," combining market investments, property, and a growing portfolio of health-impact and social-impact funds.
• Allocates across public markets, private equity, real estate/property, and specialist impact funds; at All Souls the mandate centres on UK property and a global investment portfolio.
• Strong orientation toward the charitable/foundation and higher-education endowment world, reflected in his ACF, CFG, and Nesta Investment Committee roles.
