Background

David R. Sauber is a career human-resources and labor-relations executive in the oil and gas industry. He spent 27 years at Shell Oil Company, beginning as a human resources analyst in the company's exploration and production organization and later working across its refining and chemical businesses. He held management positions at Shell's Norco, Convent, and Deer Park refineries, and as human resources and industrial relations manager he served as the oil industry's lead negotiator for national oil bargaining with the United Steelworkers International Union in both 2009 and 2012. Shell appointed him a vice president in 2013, and he retired from Shell as vice president of Human Resources Policy, Benefits and Services for Shell's U.S. business.

Sauber joined Marathon Petroleum Corporation on February 1, 2017 as Vice President of Human Resources and Labor Relations, initially reporting to Rod Nichols, then MPC's Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Administrative Services. At the time of that appointment he was 53. Announcing the hire, MPC CEO Gary Heminger said Sauber's "extensive human resources experience in our industry adds tremendous depth to our human resources organization."

He was subsequently elevated to Senior Vice President of Human Resources, Health and Administrative Services. In the July 25, 2018 announcement of MPC's post-combination leadership team (following the acquisition of Andeavor), Sauber was named Senior Vice President of Labor Relations, Operations, Health and Administrative Services, reporting to Chief Human Resources Officer Fiona C. Laird, effective upon the deal's close in the second half of 2018.

Sauber holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Central Michigan University and a master's degree in labor and industrial relations from Michigan State University.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • No verifiable investment thesis exists. Extensive searching found no evidence that David Sauber is an angel investor, that he invests in seed-stage or any-stage startups, or that he writes checks into private companies. His public profile is entirely as a corporate HR/labor-relations executive.
  • The "Angel Investors / Seed Round" designation in the source record appears to be a data-source misclassification. Founders should treat the "angel investor" label with skepticism until independently confirmed.
  • Any deals visible under his name in financial databases (e.g., MarketScreener, GuruFocus) relate to routine insider transactions in Marathon Petroleum stock tied to his executive compensation — not to venture or angel investing.

Notable Investments

  • No startup, venture, or angel-investment portfolio could be identified from any source. Recorded securities activity is limited to insider ownership and transactions in his employer's stock (Marathon Petroleum, NYSE: MPC), consistent with an executive's equity compensation rather than private investing.
