Background
David Vaughn co-founded ClariVest Asset Management in March 2006 and serves as its Chief Investment Officer for Non-US and Global Strategies. ClariVest is a San Diego–based, behavioral-finance-driven equity boutique that manages/advises on more than $8 billion for institutional clients — corporate and public pension plans, foundations, and Taft-Hartley plans worldwide. Vaughn began his investment career in 1996.
Before founding ClariVest, Vaughn was the portfolio manager for all International and Global Systematic strategies at Nicholas-Applegate Capital Management, where he was part of a systematic investment team overseeing more than $5 billion in assets. Earlier in his career he was a researcher in the Advanced Strategies and Research Group (ASRG) at Barclays Global Investors, a Research Associate at First Quadrant, and a Quantitative Research Analyst and Investment Officer with Sanwa Bank in Los Angeles.
He earned a B.S. in Economics from the California Institute of Technology and a Master's in Computational Finance (MSCF) from Carnegie Mellon University. He is a recipient of Carnegie Mellon's MSCF Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award, has been published in *The Journal of Investing*, and has been quoted by *The Wall Street Journal*, *Barron's*, and *Business Insider*. He also serves as a Lecturer of Finance at UC San Diego's Rady School of Management, teaching "Asset Management" (MGTF 430).
Outside of finance, Vaughn spent many years as a middle-school math coach and led California's state MATHCOUNTS team to victory at the 2014 national competition.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in public/listed equities through ClariVest's systematic, behavioral-finance framework — the firm's stated edge is exploiting investor behavioral biases in liquid markets, not funding private startups.
- Focus areas under his purview are non-US and global equity mandates for institutional investors (pensions, foundations, Taft-Hartley plans).
- ClariVest describes itself as a "behavioral finance-based equity manager"; its process combines quantitative/systematic signals with fundamental insight.
- No evidence of angel, seed, or private venture investing by David Vaughn was found. Founders seeking seed capital should treat this contact as very likely miscategorized.
Notable Investments
- No angel/venture portfolio companies or private deals could be verified — this individual operates in institutional public-equity markets, so a startup "notable investments" list does not apply.
- Professionally, his flagship work is ClariVest's institutional International and Global equity strategies (e.g., the ClariVest Global and non-US equity products), which he has managed since co-founding the firm in 2006.
