Dean Dorrell

Dean Dorrell is the Co-Founder and Partner of Carthona Capital, one of Australia's leading early-stage venture capital firms. He holds a B.A. (Hons.) in Economics from the University of Nottingham (1986-1989). His career began in finance as a bond trader, arbitrageur, and proprietary trader in London. A self-taught coder from an early age, he leveraged programming skills to develop some of the earliest proprietary quantitative trading models and statistical arbitrage methods in the 1990s, which propelled him to the role of Head of Bond Trading at BNP Paribas in London and later Head of Sovereign Debt Trading at Greenwich NatWest / Greenwich Capital.

Dean made his first angel investment in 1998. During the mid-2000s, he transitioned from trading into a VC, private equity, and operating executive role with Redbus Group in London. There he was involved in successful exits including the sale of RFD to Lionsgate and the merger of Video Island (a Redbus-founded company) into Lovefilm, which was ultimately acquired by Amazon. He relocated to Australia in 2010 and became Managing Director and Investment Committee Member of M.H. Carnegie & Co. in 2011, where he led the deal team in early-stage venture investments and private equity deals focused on distressed real assets such as marinas and pubs.

In 2014, Dean co-founded Carthona Capital, which has grown into one of Australia's most active early-stage VC firms with approximately A$400 million in funds under management across three funds, backed by a mix of institutional investors (superannuation funds), family offices, and high-net-worth individuals. He is also a TechCrunch contributor and holds multiple board and advisory positions across the Carthona portfolio. He currently serves as Chairman of Zero Latency and as a director at Pathzero, Josef, Qsic, Valiant Finance, Agerris, and InDebted, among others.

Carthona Capital invests at the earliest stages of company formation -- Pre-Seed, Seed, and Series A -- and is highly thematic in the opportunities it pursues. The firm focuses on enterprise applications, fintech, artificial intelligence, consumer social, deeptech, healthtech, and vertical SaaS. Carthona favours founders building technology companies with strong technical differentiation and large addressable markets.

A distinguishing characteristic of Carthona's approach is its willingness to follow on aggressively -- in one case participating in eight successive financing rounds for a single company. The firm positions itself as hands-on and proactive, taking board seats and working closely with portfolio companies on strategy, hiring, and subsequent fundraising. With over 100 investments to date, the portfolio spans 59+ tech companies, 43 enterprise (B2B) businesses, and 20+ consumer (B2C) companies.
