Background

Deepak Shantilal Parekh (born 18 October 1944, Mumbai) is one of India's most influential financiers. He studied at St. Xavier's High School and earned a B.Com from Sydenham College (University of Mumbai) before qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) in 1965, articling with Whinney, Smith and Whinney (later Ernst & Young) in London. Early in his career he held roles at Ernst & Ernst in New York, Grindlays Bank, and Chase Manhattan Bank, where he served as assistant representative for South Asia.

In 1978 Parekh joined the Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), the mortgage lender founded a year earlier by his uncle, Hasmukhbhai Parekh. He rose to become Chairman of the HDFC Group in 1993 and led it for three decades, building it into a financial-services conglomerate spanning banking, asset management, and life and general insurance. He is widely credited as an architect of India's private housing-finance industry and, in his final act at the helm, oversaw the landmark merger of HDFC Ltd. with HDFC Bank, announced in 2022 and completed on 1 July 2023, after which he stepped down.

Beyond HDFC, Parekh has served on and chaired numerous boards, including as non-executive chairman of IDFC and of Siemens Ltd. (India), and as a director of Mahindra & Mahindra, Indian Hotels Company, Fairfax India Holdings, Castrol India, and Singapore's SingTel. He has also chaired several government advisory committees (RBI's Advisory Group on Securities Market Regulation and a Ministry of Power committee on power-sector reform). His honors include the Padma Bhushan (2006), the JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award, Business India's "Businessman of the Year" (1996), and ICAEW's Outstanding Achievement Award (2010), of which he was the first international recipient.

More recently he has turned to backing startups. Tracxn records his first startup investment in 2019, and he now holds a small, hand-picked personal portfolio spanning EdTech, healthcare, and energy across India and the U.S.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage: Primarily seed and early-stage bets, though he has also joined later rounds (e.g., a Series B in EdTech). His most recent disclosed deal — Clean Core Thorium Energy — was a Series Seed.
  • Sectors: EdTech, healthcare (nephrology/hospitals), clean and nuclear energy, and enterprise/consulting-oriented B2B businesses.
  • Geography: Splits between Indian ventures and U.S.-based deep-tech (his Clean Core investment is a U.S. startup).
  • Selective, conviction-led: Rather than a high-volume angel, Parekh maintains a concentrated portfolio (roughly four disclosed companies), suggesting he backs a small number of founders and sectors where his financial-services credibility and network add value.
  • Advisory/mission themes: His interests skew toward businesses with national or developmental significance — housing, education, and energy security (e.g., thorium-based nuclear fuel aimed at existing reactors).

Notable Investments

  • Clean Core Thorium Energy (CCTE) — U.S. startup developing "ANEEL," a patented thorium + HALEU fuel for existing reactors; participated in its ~$15.5M Series Seed announced Feb 2025 (alongside Lakshmi Narayanan).
  • Nephrocare India — Kolkata-based standalone nephrology hospital chain; an early/seed backing that reached an exit via IPO in July 2024.
  • Eduisfun Technologies — Gamified EdTech company; his earliest recorded startup investment (Series B, 2019).
  • Uniqus Consultech — Global tech-enabled accounting/consulting firm with which he has been associated (advisory/backer).
