Demis Hassabis

Demis Hassabis (born 27 July 1976, London) is a British artificial intelligence researcher, neuroscientist, entrepreneur, and Nobel laureate. The son of a Greek Cypriot father and a Singaporean-Chinese mother, Hassabis was a chess prodigy from the age of four, reaching master standard at age 13 with an Elo rating of 2300 and becoming the second-highest-rated Under-14 player in the world. He finished his A-levels two years early and, during a gap year requested by Cambridge due to his young age, co-designed and lead-programmed the multi-million-selling simulation game Theme Park at just 17 alongside Peter Molyneux at Bullfrog Productions. He went on to study Computer Science at Queens' College, University of Cambridge, graduating in 1997 with a Double First. After Cambridge, he founded the video game studio Elixir Studios and worked on acclaimed titles including Republic: The Revolution and Evil Genius.

Hassabis then returned to academia to pursue a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at University College London (UCL), supervised by Eleanor Maguire at the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit. His doctoral research focused on imagination, memory, and amnesia, producing influential papers published in Nature, Science, and PNAS. His first major finding demonstrated that patients with hippocampal damage were unable to imagine themselves in new experiences. He completed postdoctoral work at MIT and Harvard before pivoting back to technology.

In 2010, Hassabis co-founded DeepMind alongside Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman in London, with the mission of solving intelligence and using it to solve everything else. Google acquired DeepMind in January 2014 in what was then its largest European acquisition. Under Hassabis's leadership, DeepMind produced landmark breakthroughs including AlphaGo (which defeated world champion Lee Sedol in 2016), AlphaFold (which predicted the 3D structure of virtually all known proteins), and AlphaZero. In April 2023, Google merged its Brain team and DeepMind into a unified lab -- Google DeepMind -- with Hassabis as CEO overseeing all of Google's AI efforts, including the Gemini family of models. In 2021, he also founded Isomorphic Labs, a separate Alphabet company focused on using AI for drug discovery.

Hassabis invests as an angel primarily in deep technology companies at the seed stage, with a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and applied science. His portfolio reflects his belief in transformative technology: AI infrastructure and chips, AI-powered enterprise software, health and biotech, and talent-building platforms for technical founders. He tends to back founders working on hard, research-intensive problems with the potential for outsized scientific or societal impact. His investments span sectors including AI hardware, productivity software, construction tech, health tech, and food science.
