Background
Denis Ribon is the co-founder, Chairman, and a Managing Partner of ArchiMed, a healthcare-dedicated private-equity firm he helped establish in 2014. He brings more than 30 years of healthcare experience, having taken an unusual path into investing: he began his career as a veterinarian before moving into management consulting at A.T. Kearney. He graduated from VetAgro Sup (the French veterinary school of Lyon) and holds an MBA from HEC Paris.
In 2001 Ribon joined the private-equity firm 3i, and in 2007 became global head of its healthcare team, overseeing the firm's healthcare investments and portfolio across Europe, North America, and Asia. It was during this period that he built the long-standing relationships — more than 20 years in some cases — with the partners who would later co-found ArchiMed. He founded ArchiMed on the conviction that "a specialized fund dedicated to healthcare would make a positive difference for businesses, investors, and patients worldwide."
Over his career Ribon has served as Deal Partner, Board Chairman, or Board Director across 25–30+ public and private healthcare companies operating in every healthcare sub-sector. These include Quintiles (now IQVIA), Labco (now Synlab), Vétoquinol, NAMSA, Natus, Polyplus, CARSO, Clean Cells, ActiGraph, Citieffe, Stragen, and SUANFARMA, among others. At ArchiMed he sits on the Life Science Tools & Services sector team and is also a Director of the EURÊKA Foundation, ArchiMed's charitable arm.
Under Ribon's leadership ArchiMed has scaled rapidly, raising €1 billion for MED Platform I and, in September 2023, a record €3.5 billion for MED Platform II — the largest buyout fund raised for exclusively healthcare-focused investing. The firm reports that its portfolio companies average roughly 20% annual topline growth and ~30% EBITDA margins.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Healthcare-only specialist: ArchiMed invests exclusively in healthcare, segmenting the sector into 450+ sub-sectors ("MedSeg") to find category leaders and buy-and-build platforms.
- Stage & structure: Growth buyouts and expansion capital — majority stakes (and some minority positions) in established, profitable, or fast-growing companies, "always backing the corresponding management teams." This is decidedly *not* seed/angel investing.
- Check size: From ~€10 million up to ~€1 billion per transaction across the fund family; the mid-cap MED Platform funds typically deploy €50M–€500M+ of equity per deal.
- Value-creation levers: Internationalization, R&D/innovation, and add-on M&A to help companies reach their "next phase of growth."
- Geography: Europe and North America core (MED Platform I LPs were ~70% European / ~30% North American), extending into APAC and LATAM.
- What makes him say yes: Strong, retained management teams; a defensible position within a well-defined healthcare niche; and clear runway for organic growth plus acquisitions.
