Background
Denise Hu is the Founding Partner and Chief Investment Officer of Archer Asia, an investment team within Rockhampton Management Limited. Archer Asia says she joined Rockhampton and established its Archer Asia fund-of-funds business in 2009, taking responsibility for business management, fund oversight, and investment functions.
Before Archer Asia, Hu was a Portfolio Manager at SAIL Advisors, the family office of Robert W. Miller. From 2003 to 2008, she headed SAIL’s Asian hedge fund research effort and managed the firm’s flagship Asia Pacific & Japan portfolio as well as segregated accounts.
Earlier in her career, from 1999 to 2003, Hu worked as a strategist in Merrill Lynch’s Global Equity Derivatives Group. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management and Economics.
Hu is active in industry and nonprofit work. In February 2026, 100 Women in Finance announced her appointment to its Global Board of Directors; the organization also identifies her as Co-Chair of the 100 Women in Finance Hong Kong Education Committee, APAC Head of Global FundWomen Week, and a director of Rockhampton Management’s Fitzroy Foundation.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Archer Asia’s public materials describe its core mandate as “diversified access to the Asian Hedge Fund opportunity set,” through the Archer Asia Fund, an Asian-focused multi-strategy fund of hedge funds launched in October 2009 with principal investment from Rockhampton Management.
- The firm says the Archer Asia Fund seeks consistent risk-adjusted returns with capital preservation as a key focus.
- Archer Asia uses a “Core” and “Satellite” approach to give investors diversified access to Asian hedged and absolute-return strategies.
- The team emphasizes rigorous investment due diligence, operational due diligence, ongoing monitoring, risk management, portfolio analysis, and asset-allocation advice.
- Hu’s public comments in Tatler Asia point to continued interest in hedge funds as a core opportunity for wealthy families seeking diversified capital preservation and growth, especially through boutique managers who can get ahead of new trends.
- Public sources do not support the stub’s “Angel Investor” or “Seed Round” classification; her verifiable role is primarily allocator, fund-of-funds manager, and advisor to families and institutions investing in Asian alternative funds.
