Background
Dr. Denise Xifara is a co-founder and Venture Partner at Mercuri VC, the London-based media-and-entertainment-technology fund she helped launch in October 2017 as GMG Ventures alongside founding partner Alan Hudson. The firm was originally anchored by The Scott Trust — the owner of Guardian Media Group (GMG) — as its cornerstone limited partner, and invests thematically across the news, media, entertainment and AI value chain. In 2023 the firm rebranded to Mercuri and closed a £50m second fund.
Xifara comes to venture from a deep quantitative and academic background. She holds a PhD in statistical genetics and an MMath in mathematics and statistics from the University of Oxford, where she was also an award-winning lecturer. After academia she moved into technology as a data scientist, building products across internet services and working with startups on chatbot and blockchain applications, as well as advising corporates on product roadmaps and go-to-market/customer engagement.
Before (and during) her venture career, Xifara co-founded Nupinion (c. 2014–2018), a startup dedicated to improving how people engage with news. Nupinion used AI to aggregate and display news across multiple sources and countries, evaluate political slant and source credibility, surface echo chambers, and support better-informed democratic decision-making. Her work on media, misinformation and democracy led to her being featured as a speaker at the Council of Europe's World Forum for Democracy (2017) and at TEDxAthens, and she is frequently cited among the leading Greek women in tech.
Her combination of a hard-science research pedigree and hands-on experience building an AI-driven news platform maps directly onto Mercuri's investment mandate — the reinvention of traditional media and content models through artificial intelligence.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests at the intersection of media, entertainment and AI — Mercuri backs "outstanding founders" across generative AI, agentic AI, voice AI, creator-economy platforms, gaming, XR, next-generation advertising and AI inference compute.
- Stage: leads and participates in pre-seed and seed rounds (with select seed/Series A follow-on); Fund II is £50m, and the firm reports a high (~73%) follow-on raise rate for its portfolio.
- Check size: roughly $100K–$5M, sweet spot ~$1.5M.
- Thematic conviction over spray-and-pray: the firm describes itself as an early-stage *thematic* investor spanning "the full content and data value chain," reflecting Xifara's own focus areas of media/content, DeepTech and SaaS.
- AI-native reinvention of media: the 2023 fund explicitly targets startups "using artificial intelligence to reinvent traditional media models" — advertising, content generation, and information/news integrity being recurring themes that echo her Nupinion work.
- Value-add posture: Xifara has spoken publicly (e.g., TEDxAthens, BGV's ESG-in-VC series) on how VCs add value beyond capital and on responsible/ESG-aware investing.
