Dennis Huber

Dennis Huber spent his entire 36-year professional career at the University of Waterloo, retiring on December 31, 2022, as Vice-President, Administration and Finance — a role he had held since January 2001, making him the longest-serving senior administrator in the university's history. He joined the university in 1986 as Manager of Systems and Records within Plant Operations, later becoming Director of Business Services, and in 1996 was appointed Associate Provost, General Services and Finance, with oversight of plant operations, financial services and budgets, purchasing, and central stores. His responsibilities were expanded and the role renamed to Vice-President following a 2001 organizational review of the university's leadership structure.

Over his tenure he worked alongside five university presidents and was repeatedly cited for institutional continuity. President Emeritus David Johnston called him "the unsung hero of the University," and President Vivek Goel described him as "an invaluable source of institutional memory and administrative continuity." During his stewardship, the university's annual financial activity and pension-plan assets each grew more than four-fold, the institution eliminated all externally financed debt, and its physical footprint more than doubled — including the opening of four satellite campuses: the School of Architecture (2004), the School of Pharmacy (2009), the UAE campus (2009–2013), and the Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business (2010). He also helped advance the David Johnston Research + Technology Park and a campus master plan connecting most Ring Road buildings.

Huber holds an Honours BBA from Wilfrid Laurier University, completed the Industrial Engineering Program at Conestoga College, and is a Certified Management Accountant (CMA). On his retirement, the university dedicated a campus green space — "Huber Lane," planted with Japanese flowering cherry trees — in recognition of his commitment to creating welcoming spaces for students. He was succeeded in the role by Jacinda Reitsma, effective December 1, 2022.
