Background

Dino Varkey is the Group CEO of GEMS Education, one of the world’s largest private K-12 education providers. He is a third-generation member of the Varkey education family and the son of GEMS founder Sunny Varkey. GEMS traces its origins to the Varkey family’s arrival in Dubai in 1959 and now operates a large international school network.

Varkey joined GEMS in 2004 and held multiple leadership roles before becoming CEO in February 2017. His prior roles included Senior Director of Business Development, Group Chief Operating Officer, Group Executive Director, and Managing Director. His remit has included strategy, business development, government and regulatory relationships, and long-term growth.

He attended Winchester College and earned an honours Bachelor’s degree in Business Studies from the University of Sheffield. He has also served as a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Education, Gender and Work from 2016 to 2018, and was a founding board member of the YPO Dubai Chapter.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Foundersuite lists Varkey as an angel investor/HNW with seed-stage focus and interest areas including education, secondary education, and International Baccalaureate.
  • His public operating thesis is education-first and long horizon: he has described GEMS as a “powerful catalyst to improve the state of our world.”
  • He has argued for private education models that solve access and supply gaps, especially in emerging markets where public systems alone cannot meet demand quickly enough.
  • He is especially aligned with education infrastructure, teacher quality, digital skills, student outcomes, and models that can scale across schools or education systems.
  • His approach appears operator-led rather than financial-only: public comments emphasize generational value, sustainability, academic quality, and long-term institution building.

Notable Investments

  • No verified personal angel portfolio list was found in public sources.
  • Ma’arif Education and Training Company: GEMS Education KSA and Hassana completed the acquisition of Ma’arif in Saudi Arabia in 2019; Varkey was pictured at the signing as CEO of GEMS Education.
  • GEMS Education / Brookfield transaction: In June 2024, CVC agreed to sell a majority of its GEMS Education stake to a Brookfield-led consortium, with the Varkey Group continuing as partner/shareholder.
  • GEMS Education India expansion: GEMS Education India announced plans in 2026 to invest up to $30 million over three to five years to expand schools and partnerships in India.
  • Oracle Skills Development Initiative partnership: In June 2026, GEMS Education became the first private school network globally to join Oracle University’s Skills Development Initiative, targeting more than 11,000 UAE students over three years.
