Background

Dmitry Antipov is a private equity and venture capital investor best known as a partner at Elbrus Capital, a Russia- and CIS-focused private equity firm founded in 2007. Public company filings and market profiles identify him as a partner/director at Elbrus Capital and as a director of Cian PLC, the Russian online real-estate classifieds company in which Elbrus was a major shareholder.

Before joining Elbrus Capital in 2013, Antipov worked at Baring Vostok Capital Partners in Russia, serving as investment manager from 2008 to 2010 and investment director from 2010 to 2013. Earlier in his career, he was a senior manager in the Investment Department at VTB Bank from 2004 to 2005, after corporate-finance roles at Deloitte & Touche and Ernst & Young.

Antipov’s education is unusually strong for the regional private-equity market: public Cian director biographies state that he received a Ph.D. in Economics from Moscow State University in 2004 and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2007. His LinkedIn profile summarizes his focus as “PE & VC professional with focus on digital / tech.”

At Cian, Antipov has served on the board as an Elbrus-linked director. In July 2022, Cian announced that he would step down from the audit committee but continue as a member of the board.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Elbrus Capital’s core strategy is not seed-stage angel investing; it is growth equity and buyout investing in Russia/CIS companies that already have scale, management depth, and a path to market leadership.
  • The firm looks for control or significant minority stakes in medium-sized businesses, often where it can help with strategy, governance, hiring, compensation design, capital structure, and consolidation.
  • IFC described Elbrus Fund II as targeting mid-sized Russian enterprises with enterprise values of USD 50-150 million and USD 20-50 million per investment.
  • EBRD described the fund strategy as buy-and-build: acquire a platform company, then add acquisitions to create value through growth, profitability improvement, governance, and multiple expansion.
  • Sector pattern: digital marketplaces, online services, B2B infrastructure, logistics, consumer services, healthcare/education, SaaS and enterprise software.
  • In Rubbles’ Series B announcement, Antipov said Elbrus “highly evaluates the prospects” for enterprise data-analysis solutions and highlighted platforms that help clients optimize business processes, grow revenue, or reduce costs.
