Background

Don Holmstrom is President of Value Drivers Inc., a business advisory firm he founded in 2009. Value Drivers says it advises owners of entrepreneurial companies in the $1 million to $100 million range on operating and financial improvement, strategic planning, acquisition growth, exit readiness, and sale processes. The firm reports having served more than 60 clients, closed 11 buy-side and sell-side transactions totaling more than $130 million, completed due diligence and quality-of-earnings work, and raised more than $150 million in debt and equity capital.

Holmstrom has more than 30 years of executive and transaction experience. Value Drivers says he has held CEO, CFO, and COO roles in multi-location and multi-geography companies for more than 20 years, and has worked as principal or advisor on more than 200 transactions with a combined value of approximately $1 billion. MacKay CEO Forums states that he has led organizations with revenue up to $200 million annually, closed more than 225 M&A transactions totaling over $1 billion, and raised over $500 million in debt and equity capital.

His operating history includes Executive Vice President and CFO roles at good natured Products Inc., where MacKay says he helped lead 900% revenue growth and operational expansion. Other reported roles include leadership positions at Eaglequest Golf Centers, The Loewen Group, Silver Recycling Company, Ad Team Canada, PricewaterhouseCoopers Canada, and Solegear Bioplastics. He is a Chartered Accountant and graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce degree; his LinkedIn profile also notes ICAA training from 1983 to 1985, articling at Price Waterhouse Edmonton, and a 1984 Gold Medal for Auditing.

Holmstrom is also active with MacKay CEO Forums. He previously chaired a MacKay CEO Forum in Vancouver from 2016 to 2019 and is now listed as a MacKay CEO Forums Chair in Kelowna, focused on CEOs and executives in the Okanagan Valley.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Public evidence positions Holmstrom primarily as an operator, corporate finance advisor, M&A advisor, and occasional insider investor rather than a dedicated institutional venture investor.
  • Value Drivers’ stated focus is to “advise, support and drive value” for entrepreneurial companies by improving financial and operating performance, building strategic plans, pursuing acquisition growth, and preparing for exits.
  • He appears strongest fit for founders or owners who need practical help with M&A, due diligence, valuation, capital raising, CFO-level planning, governance, and operational scaling.
  • His known investment activity includes participation in good natured Products financings while he was an officer of the company, including a 2018 convertible debenture subscription and a 2020 brokered private placement through Value Drivers Inc.
  • No independently verified public source was found confirming a standard angel-investing check size, seed-stage mandate, or formal venture portfolio.
